The world’s only Mazu-shaped hot air balloon is making its historic debut in Taichung, as the 2026 Shigang Hot Air Balloon Festival prepares to launch from August 22 to 24 at Touniu Sports Park. Taichung City Civil Affairs Bureau Director Wu Shih-wei announced that this year’s event will feature six tethered hot air balloon rides, along with a special performance by the Mazu-themed balloon from Taitung’s Tianhou Temple. The festival will also host live music, gourmet food markets, dazzling fireworks, and interactive family activities. Popular performers including Nine One One, Golden Melody Award winner Show Huang, and others will take the stage, inviting visitors from across Taiwan to experience the magic of hot air balloons, enjoy the fireworks, and immerse themselves in the charm of this mountain town’s summer celebration.
Director Wu emphasized that the Shigang Hot Air Balloon Festival has become one of Taichung’s most iconic summer events, with attendance rising each year. The uniquely designed hot air balloons have consistently drawn crowds eager to capture photos. This year’s biggest highlight is the debut of the world’s only Mazu-shaped balloon, traveling from Taitung’s Tianhou Temple to Taichung for the first time. By transforming traditional religious symbolism into a vibrant, floating spectacle, the event blends faith culture with balloon artistry, showcasing Taiwan’s unique cultural identity. The organizers aim to generate buzz through international cultural exchange and distinctive balloon displays, drawing tourists and photography enthusiasts to Shigang, boosting visibility, and strengthening Taichung’s mountain region as a premier tourist destination.
Shigang District Chief Hsu Tien-lung stated that this year’s theme, 'Shigang Takes Flight – A Happy Mountain Town,' centers on four pillars: happiness, delicious food, music, and family. The event builds on the popular balloon rides while integrating local agricultural specialties, food trucks, creative markets, and cultural performances. Multiple renowned artists and performance groups will take turns on stage, with activities running from day into night. Visitors can gaze at balloons soaring above the mountain skyline, enjoy live concerts, and witness spectacular fireworks, experiencing Shigang’s rich blend of tourism, culture, and leisure under the night sky.
The Shigang District Office revealed a star-studded evening lineup, featuring popular band Nine One One, Golden Melody Award-winning singer Show Huang, Lin Yi-Ring, Yang Ching-Yu, Wu Yu-Hsuan, SONNiE Sangni, NUTS, and the CTBC Brothers cheerleading team.
