Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu recently disclosed that he visited Germany in June, touring the Berlin Wall and the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, sparking public attention. On the 22nd, Wu stated that Europe allows for free travel and that he has visited multiple European countries, expressing special gratitude to all parties involved for facilitating a smooth and successful visit. Regarding his trip to Germany, Wu emphasized that he visited several sites related to transitional justice in Berlin, noting that deepening democracy requires continuous attention to transitional justice issues.
In late June, Wu led a trade and economic delegation to Poland and Italy. He later posted on Facebook revealing that during his June visit to Germany, he walked along the Berlin Wall—a symbol of Cold War division—and toured the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, formerly the Stasi prison for political prisoners in East Germany, guided by the family members of political victims. He shared Taiwan's history of the White Terror era and its ongoing transitional justice efforts. After returning to Taiwan, he received a letter from the guide, expressing hope to invite them to Taiwan for future exchanges.
Speaking to the media before delivering a special report to the Legislative Yuan's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, Wu said his visit to Berlin was particularly focused on understanding Germany's approach to transitional justice, stressing that deepening democracy requires sustained attention to this issue. He added, 'I believe Europe is a place where free travel is possible, and I have visited various European countries multiple times. This is well known externally. We especially thank all parties involved for enabling this visit to proceed smoothly and successfully.'
According to Storm Media, since Wu assumed office as Foreign Minister on May 20, 2024, he has visited Belgium, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy, the Vatican, Austria, France, and Switzerland. With this latest trip to Germany, Wu has now completed five European tours in just over two years, visiting a total of 11 European countries.
