Keelung Mayoral Race: Who Does James Soong Support—Hsieh Kuo-liang or Tung Tzu-wei? He Reveals His Ties: 'I Nurtured Him Myself'

In the 2026 county and city mayoral elections, political parties have already nominated their candidates. The Kuomintang (KMT) has incumbent mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang running for re-election in Keelung, while the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has nominated Keelung City Council Speaker Tung Tzu-wei. James Soong, chairman of the People First Party, was asked on the 22nd about whom he supports and revealed his relationship with both candidates.

Soong recently campaigned in Qidu District, Keelung, supporting Deputy Council Speaker Yang Hsiu-yu. When interviewed about who he would support in the upcoming Keelung mayoral election, Soong stated that he is one of the few politicians in Taiwan with 'extremely broad personal connections' and has deep, multi-generational ties with both candidates.

He said that without his support, Tung Tzu-wei might not have entered politics. When Tung first ran for office, Soong campaigned for him. The reason, he explained, dates back to the 2000 presidential election, when Tung's grandfather unconditionally provided a venue for Soong's press conferences and public rallies. Soong expressed deep gratitude for this act of kindness and supported Tung's first campaign as a gesture of reciprocity.

Regarding Hsieh Kuo-liang, Soong emphasized, 'Hsieh is someone I and the People First Party have nurtured step by step.' He also shared a long-standing friendship with Hsieh's father. As for whom Keelung residents should vote for, Soong repeated, 'Respect, respect, respect,' emphasizing that the decision ultimately lies with the people of Keelung. With several months remaining, he urged voters to carefully examine both candidates' policy platforms and choose the one best able to solve Keelung's problems. He expressed hope that the better candidate would win and serve the people well.
