Democratic Progressive Party legislator and New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-Hui attended the opening press conference of the '2026 25th Comic Exhibition' today (23rd), followed by a visit to the exhibition area where she purchased comics and anime merchandise, demonstrating tangible support for Taiwan's animation and manga industry. She emphasized that the ACGN (Animation, Comics, Games, Novels) industry has become a key symbol of urban soft power. If elected mayor of New Taipei, she pledged to actively promote collaboration between local and international IPs, building an industrial ecosystem that integrates cultural creativity with tourism experiences.
Su highlighted that the manga industry should not be limited to exhibitions or events, but should evolve into an immersive experience economy through IP physicalization, driving local culture and tourism. She cited Taiwanese manga artist Chang Chi-Ya's work 'The Tea Path of Strangers' and award-winning artist Chien Chia-Cheng's 'Rust-Colored Mountain City' as examples. The former connects the tea culture history of Shiding, Pinglin, and Dadaocheng, while the latter portrays the mountainous landscapes of Jiufen and Jinguashi, showcasing New Taipei's rich cultural heritage.
She noted that these works possess not only artistic value but also serve as important media for understanding local culture. She hopes to link all 29 administrative districts of New Taipei through manga IPs, enabling more domestic and international tourists to discover and visit the city through these creative works.
Su also reviewed her achievements in the Legislative Yuan, including successfully advocating for the inclusion of comics in the Ministry of Culture's recommended reading list for elementary and secondary schools, and expanding the eligibility of the Cultural Voucher program to encourage more youth engagement with local culture and creative content, thereby supporting the sustainable development of Taiwan's cultural industries.
Sharing her personal favorite anime, Su expressed deep inspiration from 'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End,' particularly moved by the line, 'It's meaningful because we traveled together.' She likened city-building to a journey requiring collective effort, and is currently assembling a diverse team of professionals across various fields. Her vision is to create a more creative and vibrant New Taipei, where each of the 29 districts shines with its unique identity, transforming from 'satellites' into 'brilliant stars.'
