Yulia Sirko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament and former Deputy Minister of Economic and Trade, visited Taiwan to share two major lessons from Ukraine's four-and-a-half-year war with Russia. First, peace can only be discussed when a nation is prepared for war, and investing in preparedness and deterrence is far more cost-effective than actually fighting an enemy. She illustrated this by stating that Ukraine's current annual war expenditure is approximately €120 billion, equivalent to over NT$4.42 trillion, more than four times Taiwan’s annual defense budget of NT$949.5 billion for this year.
