Japan's Tourism Agency today released the latest results of its 'Survey on Overseas Visitors' Spending Trends' for the second quarter (April to June) of 2026. The data shows that total spending by foreign visitors during this period reached ¥2.5096 trillion, a slight 0.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Notably, while Chinese tourists—once the primary source of inbound spending—saw their total expenditure drop by nearly 50%, robust spending growth from travelers from Taiwan, the United States, Indonesia, and Singapore successfully offset the decline caused by the shrinking Chinese market.

Top 10 Countries by Total Spending in Q2 2026: 1. 🇺🇸 United States: ¥384.8 billion (+8.5% year-on-year, top spender) 2. 🇹🇼 Taiwan: ¥363.9 billion (+27.9%) 3. 🇨🇳 China: ¥259.2 billion (-48.8%) 4. 🇰🇷 South Korea: ¥258.9 billion (+12.2%) 5. 🇭🇰 Hong Kong: ¥145.2 billion (+7.8%) 6. 🇦🇺 Australia: ¥105.9 billion (+5.9%) 7. 🇹🇭 Thailand: ¥71.8 billion (+0.3%) 8. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: ¥68.7 billion (+0.4%) 9. 🇨🇦 Canada: ¥68.1 billion (+10.4%) 10. 🇸🇬 Singapore: ¥60.0 billion (+20.1%)

Emerging markets also contributed significantly, including India (¥40.7 billion, +43.8%), Indonesia (¥42.2 billion, +40.3%), Malaysia (¥39.4 billion, +39.8%), and Russia (¥27.5 billion, +62.3%), all providing strong support to Japan's tourism sector.

When examining per-capita spending, the rankings shift dramatically, with long-haul and Middle Eastern travelers showing exceptional spending power:

Top 1: Mexico – ¥514,925 per person (highest per-capita spender) Top 2: Middle East – ¥482,836 per person Top 3: United Kingdom – ¥456,493 per person No. 15: China – ¥266,753 per person No. 21: Taiwan – ¥196,641 per person (approximately NT$39,000) South Korea (last): ¥99,542 per person (due to short-stay, quick-trip travel patterns, resulting in the lowest per-capita spending).

The survey results indicate a significant shift in Japan's inbound tourism market structure. The United States has officially emerged as Japan's core high-spending market, with Taiwan closely following as the second-largest source of spending. In contrast, despite China still ranking third in total spending, its influence on Japan's tourism market has diminished due to declines in both visitor numbers and per-capita spending.
