China's summer box office rankings have recently shifted. Stephen Chow's new film 'Kung Fu Women's Soccer' held the top spot for two consecutive weeks after its release. However, the animated film 'The Eight Immortals!' gradually caught up through strong audience word-of-mouth, overtaking the previously leading 'Kung Fu Women's Soccer' by securing the daily box office crown for three consecutive days starting July 24. The film recorded daily earnings exceeding 100 million RMB (approximately 592 million TWD) on both weekend days, emerging as a dark horse in the latter half of the summer season.
'The Eight Immortals!' demonstrated exceptional performance in terms of screen share versus revenue. On July 25, the film occupied only about 29% of screenings but captured approximately 46% of the national daily box office, earning 124 million RMB (about 592 million TWD). In other words, despite receiving fewer than 30% of total screenings, the film accounted for nearly half of the daily revenue, drawing significant attention to whether cinemas will increase its screening allocation.
'The Eight Immortals!' surpassed 3.6 billion TWD in cumulative box office revenue after nine days of release. The film's momentum continued on July 26, grossing another 129 million RMB (approximately 616 million TWD). To date, after nine days in theaters, its total box office has exceeded 765 million RMB (about 3.656 billion TWD). From a modest initial screening rate to now claiming the daily top spot consecutively, 'The Eight Immortals!' has reintroduced uncertainty into the previously clear summer box office rankings.
Although 'Kung Fu Women's Soccer' lost the daily top position to 'The Eight Immortals!', it still held onto second place over the weekend. After 16 days in theaters, its cumulative box office has reached 1.949 billion RMB (approximately 9.316 billion TWD). If current trends continue, it is expected to surpass 2 billion RMB as early as today (July 27), reaffirming Stephen Chow's enduring market appeal.
