July 26 marked the first anniversary of the mass recall movement. The Kuomintang held an event where multiple blue camp legislators and councilors took turns lambasting the Lai administration for remaining "muddled, arrogant, and stubborn" after one year. In response to the ultimate 32-to-0 failure of the mass recall, psychiatrist Shen Cheng-nan posted on Facebook, directly calling out the thousands of writers who once supported the recall: "Now your tiny mountainous country is filled with carcinogenic oil everywhere. Have you uttered even half a sound?"
On July 26 last year, the first wave of mass recall votes failed as none of the 24 KMT legislators or Hsinchu Mayor Kao Hung-an passed the threshold. The second wave on August 23 also failed, resulting in a final tally of 32-to-0 against all recall motions. Shen Cheng-nan asked if people remember last year's slogan: "If I must be born a thousand times, I would only wish to be born in that tiny mountainous country of mine!" A year has passed—why have those thousand-plus writers gone silent?
Two leading writers recently claimed that despite the recall's failure, it was a necessary process for building consensus. Shen pointed out that one of them has since won multiple international literary awards, yet the media has conveniently omitted their role as a key instigator of the recall. This writer, Shen noted, fled overseas immediately after the first recall vote failed, prioritizing book promotion tours over civic responsibility.
Shen bluntly stated that Taiwanese writers generally suffer from limited intellectual depth and breadth. How could they believe the mass recall was a noble act of sacrifice for Taiwan, emulating democratic martyrs? "They don’t even understand basic democratic principles, yet they dare to shout so loudly."
Mockingly, Shen asked: "Now your tiny mountainous country is full of carcinogenic oil everywhere. Have you uttered even half a sound?" This, he said, reveals the true quality of their literary works. He urged those who claim to love Taiwan: "Before you save the world, save yourselves first. What exactly are you writing to enlighten others? You yourselves are the most ignorant and deluded of all."
