Keigo Higashino, the Japanese master of mystery fiction renowned for works such as 'The Devotion of Suspect X' and 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store,' passed away on the 23rd due to colon cancer. He was 68 years old. His works, which blend mystery with humanity and reflect social issues, have garnered a wide fan base in Taiwan.

Born in Osaka City, Japan, in 1958, Higashino graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Osaka Prefectural University and worked as an engineer before turning to writing. In 1985, he made his literary debut by winning the Edogawa Rampo Prize for 'After School.' He later solidified his status as a leading figure in Japanese literature by winning both the Naoki Prize and the Honkaku Mystery Award for 'The Devotion of Suspect X.' Many of his works, including 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store,' have been adapted into films and television series.

Higashino was more than just a mystery writer—he delved deeply into human nature and societal issues.

For many readers in Taiwan, Higashino was not only one of the most familiar Japanese authors but also a pivotal guide who introduced countless people to the world of Japanese mystery fiction and its film and television adaptations. Dong Yang, advisor to the Taiwan Mystery Writers Association, told reporters from Central News Agency that he was still in shock upon hearing the news of Higashino's passing.

Dong Yang believes that Higashino broke the traditional formulas of mystery fiction and even created new possibilities. Through mystery storytelling, Higashino enabled the public to see reflections of humanity, love, family, education, and social concerns—including discussions on nuclear energy, nuclear disasters, and long-term care. Dong Yang stated, 'Higashino expanded the genre of “mystery” and became synonymous with “Japanese mystery.”'

Higashino's writing was defined by both consistency and evolution.

Dong Yang noted that one hallmark of Higashino's work was 'consistency'—'From his debut to his final publications before his passing, his profound love for mystery fiction is evident. His determination to continue writing while battling colon cancer is truly admirable.'

A second hallmark, Dong Yang said, was 'change'—'He stayed closely attuned to societal changes and everyday life, allowing readers in both Japan and Taiwan to see the spirit of the times reflected in his works.'

Lowering the barrier to traditional mystery fiction with emotional depth.

Zhang Weizhong, a writer based in Japan, told Central News Agency that Higashino's greatest achievement was making the often-difficult genre of orthodox mystery fiction accessible to a broader audience, inviting more readers into the world of mystery. He emphasized that Higashino infused his writing with deep 'human warmth,' a rare trait among other mystery authors.

Hsu Ting-ting, chief editor at Crown Publishing, told reporters that among Higashino's works, 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store' is the most popular. 'This book greatly expanded his readership, attracting many who don’t typically read mystery fiction.' Hsu noted that what makes Higashino's works special is their fusion of genre fiction and literary fiction. 'His stories are suitable for all ages and offer a high level of reading enjoyment to everyone.'

Integrating puzzle-solving into everyday social cases.

Hsu Ting-ting explained that conventional mystery fiction tends to feel somewhat 'cold,' with readers primarily focused on logical puzzle-solving. 'But Higashino is remarkable—he seamlessly integrates mystery elements into relatable, everyday social cases using a down-to-earth narrative style. Readers naturally become immersed, which is why his works have been so successful in Taiwan.'

Hsu added that Crown Publishing holds the rights to most of Higashino's works. They recently released a 500,000-copy commemorative edition of 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store,' and several works remain unpublished in Chinese. The publisher plans to continue promoting and releasing these titles, hoping to introduce more readers to this significant author.
