The 14th Strait Youth Forum series event, 'Gathering in Sports, Dreaming Through Handball – 4th Strait Cup Youth Handball Exchange,' was recently held in Fuzhou, attracting 10 handball teams and over 200 youth participants from both sides of the strait. Among them, 56 teachers and students from Taiwan participated, with 30 visiting Fuzhou for the first time. Through handball competitions, cultural visits, and youth exchanges, mutual interaction and understanding were strengthened.

Ten teams and more than 200 young people competed together, while also deepening interactions through visits to science and technology innovation parks and historical sites. Centered on the theme of 'Sports + Culture + Exchange,' the event featured not only handball matches but also cultural tours, city experiences, and youth forums, aiming to help Taiwanese youth learn about Fuzhou’s cultural heritage, urban development, and youth support resources beyond sports.

From July 12 to 15, Taiwanese educators and students visited landmarks such as Qishan Wannfo Temple to explore the characteristics of Min capital culture. They also toured the Cross-Strait Sci-Tech Innovation Community Exchange Service Center in Fuzhou High-Tech Zone, where they received briefings on internship, employment, and entrepreneurship policies. This was followed by youth forums where participants exchanged views on education, career planning, and startup experiences. Evening activities included a visit to the Yantai Mountain Historical and Cultural District, allowing participants to experience Fuzhou’s blend of historical charm and modern commercial development, further understanding the local youth development environment.

The highlight of the event, the 'Strait Cup' handball exchange tournament, took place on July 14 at the Fuyao University of Science and Technology Gymnasium. Participating teams included the Feng Chia University Alumni Handball Club and the Kaohsiung Women's Handball Representative Team from Taiwan, as well as teams from Fujian Normal University, Fuzhou No. 7 Middle School, Xiamen Experimental Middle School, Dehua No. 2 Middle School, and Sanming Shaxian Jinsha Senior High School from the mainland. Players honed their skills through offensive and defensive plays and teamwork, while also building friendships on the court.

The School of Physical Education at Fujian Normal University expressed hope that handball exchanges would continue to serve as a bridge in youth interaction, enabling participants to gain friendship through competition and broaden their horizons through cultural exchange. The Fuzhou Handball Association announced plans to institutionalize youth handball exchanges between Fuzhou and Taiwan, establishing mechanisms such as branded tournaments, coach exchanges, youth training collaborations, and referee training to deepen cross-strait handball cooperation.

Representatives from the Taiwan Handball Association expressed hopes to use this exchange as a starting point to promote ongoing club visits, joint training camps, and friendly matches between the two sides, creating more opportunities for young athletes to connect through sports. Taiwanese players visiting Fuzhou for the first time shared that they were impressed by the city’s infrastructure and cultural uniqueness, and had made many new friends from the mainland. They expressed hopes to maintain contact and reunite on the court in the future.

The organizers emphasized that the four-day exchange not only promoted interaction among youth across the strait through sports but also integrated cultural visits and city experiences. They hope to continue expanding youth exchange platforms, enabling more young people to build friendships and deepen mutual understanding through sports.
