Following the discovery of benzopyrene contamination in soybean salad oil, camellia oil products have now also been compromised. Yesterday, Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Ministry of Health and Welfare released new inspection results, revealing that four additional batches of camellia oil produced by Lianjing Company have been found to exceed benzopyrene safety standards. Regulatory authorities have ordered the full removal, recall, and destruction of the affected batches. The New Taipei City Health Bureau has also ordered the company to suspend all camellia oil production and halt sales immediately.
Lianjing Camellia Oil Again Found with 4 Batches Exceeding Benzopyrene Limits – New Taipei Orders Removal and Destruction, Full Sales Suspension
On the evening of the 21st, Lianjing voluntarily reported elevated benzopyrene levels in its camellia oil to the authorities. FDA Commissioner Chiang Chih-kang stated at a press conference that out of seven batches initially self-reported by the company, two had already tested positive for benzopyrene at 2.9 ppb (above the legal limit). The remaining five batches were sampled by the New Taipei City Health Bureau and tested by the FDA. The latest results show that four additional batches failed to meet safety standards. However, the FDA confirmed these non-compliant batches had not yet been shipped to the market.
The FDA emphasized that this Lianjing camellia oil incident is entirely unrelated to the previously reported Zhonglian Oils case.
Total of 5,024 Cans from Same Batch of Raw Material – 939 Already in Market, Urgent Recall Underway
According to FDA data, a total of 5,024 cans of camellia oil were produced using the same batch of raw material and identical manufacturing process as the non-compliant products:
- Distributed to retail channels: 939 cans (currently under regulatory supervision for recall and removal) - Unsold inventory: 4,085 cans (currently sealed and held by the company)
The New Taipei City Health Bureau has ordered Lianjing to complete the removal of all seven camellia oil batches made from the same raw material by noon on July 23.
Lianjing stated that, upon investigation, most of the affected products were intercepted and fully sealed at the factory and logistics warehouses before distribution. The whereabouts of the remaining units are known, and recovery efforts are ongoing. The company urged consumers not to panic.
Lianjing emphasized that any consumer who purchased products from the affected batches (batch numbers: 26V224XW01, 26S624XW01) or has concerns about the product can receive a full unconditional refund or replacement, with all associated costs borne by Lianjing. Consumers can contact the customer service hotline at 02-2917-2068 or visit the official website to process refunds. The company expressed deep apologies to consumers, partners, and retailers for the inconvenience caused and pledged to accept public scrutiny.
New Taipei City Health Bureau Takes Action – Orders Lianjing to Immediately Halt All Production and Sales of Camellia Oil
FDA Commissioner Chiang Chih-kang stated that the complete inspection results for the five camellia oil products have been transferred to the New Taipei City Health Bureau, with instructions to enforce strict oversight of the company’s recall, removal, and destruction procedures.
Additionally, to protect consumer food safety, the New Taipei City Health Bureau has legally required Lianjing to suspend all production and sales of its camellia oil products starting July 22.
