Taiwanese drone manufacturer LeTiger Technology today (29) jointly announced with US defense technology unicorn Shield AI the successful completion of the first multi-asset autonomous maritime collaboration demonstration using the Hivemind AI Pilot at the Dapeng Bay Sailing Center in Pingtung. The Hivemind AI system has been deployed on LeTiger's SeaShark unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), enabling multiple unmanned vessels to autonomously conduct coordinated missions.
How did Hivemind achieve multi-vessel coordination? LeTiger explained that the demonstration took place in Dapeng Bay, Pingtung, where a task force composed of LeTiger's SeaShark 600 and SeaShark 800 USVs, equipped with the Hivemind AI system, autonomously executed maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The system integrated maritime radar, electro-optical imaging, and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to autonomously plan mission waypoints, search designated sea areas, identify target vessels, and coordinate multiple unmanned vessels to escort and guide targets out of restricted zones. This demonstration also marked the first time Hivemind successfully integrated maritime radar and AIS systems.
Nathan Michael, Chief Technology Officer of Shield AI, stated that Hivemind continues to prove that true mission autonomy can span different operational domains, platforms, and mission functions, bringing new capabilities to distributed intelligence gathering and maritime security operations. As Shield AI continues to collaborate with LeTiger Technology to expand the scale and complexity of autonomous maritime fleets, these systems will enhance maritime surveillance efficiency and strengthen maritime security and deterrence.
What are the next steps in collaboration? Earlier this year, Shield AI and LeTiger Technology announced a strategic partnership to integrate the Hivemind AI Pilot into various LeTiger unmanned system platforms, developing dual-use autonomous maritime mission capabilities. LeTiger's product portfolio includes unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with its FPV platform already certified under the US Department of Defense's Blue UAS program, meeting cybersecurity, safety, and non-Chinese supply chain requirements for the US and allied defense supply chains.
Shield AI and LeTiger jointly stated that they will build upon this demonstration to deepen collaboration, including increasing sensor integration, enhancing the complexity of autonomous behaviors, expanding the scale of unmanned vehicle coordination, and further developing autonomous mission capabilities in open ocean environments.
How can autonomous AI strengthen Taiwan's maritime security? Su Sheng-Jie, General Manager of LeTiger Technology, emphasized that as an island nation, maritime security is increasingly vital for Taiwan. By integrating AI autonomous piloting systems into LeTiger's unmanned platforms, a distributed, networked, and collaboratively autonomous unmanned team can be established, enabling more efficient environmental awareness, target detection, classification, and identification, thereby improving operator response speed, mission scalability, and overall operational efficiency. He stated that this demonstration marks a significant milestone in Taiwan's development of autonomous maritime unmanned systems and reflects the ongoing advancement of more sophisticated and resilient autonomous maritime capabilities through the partnership with Shield AI.
The Hivemind AI Pilot is an autonomous artificial intelligence system developed by Shield AI that enables various platforms to autonomously perform perception, decision-making, and action without human intervention. Hivemind has already been successfully applied to over 30 different platforms, including F-16 fighter jets, jet-powered drones, helicopters, unmanned vessels, and ground unmanned vehicles.
