The upper floors of a post office are now a new home for students. In response to the rapid population growth in the Peking University Special District of New Taipei City, Chunghwa Post has relocated its former post office inside the National Taipei University campus outside the school grounds, officially moving into Dae-Yi Road, Shulin District on the 27th and renaming it the Peking University Special District Post Office. The new branch not only expands postal and financial services but also marks the first time in Taiwan that a post office has been integrated with social housing. Twenty units have been planned on the 5th and 6th floors of the building, which will be prioritized for qualified National Taipei University students.
An auspicious lion dance opened the ceremony, with Chunghwa Post Chairman Wang Guo-Cai, Legislative Yuan member Su Chiao-Hui, and other distinguished guests jointly inaugurating the new branch. They also planted three saplings of hope, symbolizing sustainable development and harmonious coexistence with the local community.
The post office also issued a commemorative first-day cancellation stamp, attracting many residents who brought postcards to line up and get them stamped, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere as they marked the official launch of the Peking University Special District Post Office.
Wang Guo-Cai stated that the original National Taipei University Post Office had operated for nearly 20 years, primarily serving approximately 10,000 faculty and students on campus. However, the Peking University Special District has experienced rapid development in recent years, with the surrounding population growing to about 50,000 to 60,000 people. The space and service capacity of the former on-campus location could no longer meet the needs of local residents.
By relocating to a central community location, the post office has expanded its service area from the campus to the entire Peking University Special District. The new service hall features six dedicated and hybrid workstations for postal services, savings and remittances, and life insurance, allowing customers to complete multiple transactions in one place.
The new branch also includes a 24-hour self-service area, enabling customers to send and receive parcels and conduct financial transactions at any time, regardless of the post office’s operating hours, significantly enhancing convenience for working professionals, students, and community residents.
Chunghwa Post aims to reduce waiting times through digital equipment and hybrid counters, transforming the post office from a mere place for sending letters and collecting packages into an integrated hub for finance, daily life, and community services.
The highlight of this relocation is Chunghwa Post’s first collaboration with government policy to integrate post office facilities with social housing. A total of 20 social housing units have been planned on the 5th and 6th floors, expected to be prioritized for qualified National Taipei University students, allowing postal assets to serve both public service and housing support functions.
Cheng Wen-Han from the Planning and Marketing Division of Banqiao Post Office stated, 'The social housing units are still undergoing planning and application procedures by the relevant authorities. Details such as eligibility criteria, application methods, and other specifics will be announced to the public after approval by the competent authority.'
