The Meteorological Agency announced today that high temperatures and hot weather will continue across regions over the next week. Moderate Typhoon Dolphin is expected to strengthen into a strong typhoon. Even if it does not directly land in Japan, its outer cloud system may indirectly impact the country, particularly Kyushu, which should remain vigilant for significant rainfall.
According to the Meteorological Agency's typhoon update, as of 2:00 PM today, the center of Moderate Typhoon Dolphin is located approximately 5,040 kilometers east of Eluanbi over the sea, moving northwest. The maximum sustained wind speed near the center is 48 meters per second, with a 200-kilometer average radius of gale-force winds (Beaufort Scale 7).
Wang Pin-Xiang, a forecaster at the Central Weather Administration, told reporters from Central News Agency that Dolphin is a large and powerful typhoon. Even without making direct landfall in Japan, its outer cloud system could still cause indirect effects, especially notable rainfall in Kyushu. Currently, observations indicate that Dolphin will have no impact on Taiwan over the next week.
Wang stated that Dolphin remains at the upper limit of a moderate typhoon but will soon intensify into a strong typhoon. Based on current international model simulations, the typhoon will steadily move toward the sea south of Japan before August 3–4. However, by August 5–6, its path shows significant divergence—potentially shifting northward toward Japan, or westward toward South Korea, China, or even the northern waters of Taiwan. The clarity of its trajectory may not emerge until next week.
Wang added that over the next week, the general weather pattern will remain hot, dominated by afternoon thunderstorms, with rainfall areas gradually shrinking. Temperatures across regions will range from 33°C to 35°C, with the Taipei Basin and mountainous areas in central and southern Taiwan continuing to guard against temperatures exceeding 36°C.
Wang noted that tomorrow, July 31, afternoon rains will primarily affect western lowlands and eastern mountainous areas. From August 1 to 4, afternoon thunderstorm coverage will shrink, mainly limited to mountainous regions. Notably, scattered brief showers may occur in central and southern Taiwan early on August 1.
