A powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan on July 28, causing widespread damage including collapsed bridges, severed transportation links, and destroyed homes, severely impacting local livelihoods and infrastructure. Many residents were forced to evacuate, and aftershocks continue to occur. China Trust Commercial Bank and its subsidiary, Tokyo Star Bank, announced today (30) a joint donation of 50 million yen to support relief efforts and assist affected communities in rebuilding their lives.

China Trust stated that exchanges between Taiwan and Japan are frequent and the friendship is deep. Tokyo Star Bank has been operating in Japan for many years and has recently expanded its presence in the Kyushu region. Since signing a cooperation memorandum with Kumamoto Prefecture in 2024, the bank has received strong support from local governments, established a branch in the area, and built close ties by serving local businesses and residents. It also maintains deep financial and corporate relationships within Kumamoto, demonstrating a strong bond with the region.

In response to the recent earthquake in Kumamoto, China Trust, together with Tokyo Star Bank, is donating 50 million yen to actively support medical rescue, supply replenishment, and post-disaster reconstruction. The banks will continue to monitor local needs and provide additional necessary assistance. To help clients affected by the earthquake resume normal life as soon as possible, Tokyo Star Bank’s Kumamoto branch has set up a consultation desk to provide financial advice and support to disaster victims. Staff fluent in Chinese are also available to assist Taiwanese residents living and working in Kumamoto.

China Trust has long been attentive to major disasters both domestically and internationally. In addition to this Kumamoto earthquake, the bank provided immediate support following the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, the 2018 Osaka earthquake, and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Through prompt action, the bank aims to fulfill its corporate social responsibility and leverage its influence to help affected communities return to normal life as quickly as possible.
