A single drumbeat echoes across ancient stone walls, once again letting the world hear Taiwan. In response to the Ministry of Culture’s initiative for the '2026 European Taiwan Cultural Year,' U-Theatre is once again embarking on a European tour, visiting Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany. Through its classic works 'Vajra Heart' and 'Night Mountain Mist,' as well as the meditative 'Mindful Walk,' the troupe will create a profound bodily dialogue between East and West across ancient theatres and cultural cities.

This is more than just an overseas performance—it is a cultural pilgrimage from the mountains to the world. Drummers calm their minds through breath, measure the land with their steps, and transcend language through rhythm. European audiences will experience the deep, introspective vitality of Taiwan’s performing arts through performance, walking, and meditation.

Drumbeats Resonate in Ancient Theatres—Stone Walls Beat Again

'Vajra Heart' will be performed from August 5 to 6 at the Segesta Festival in Italy, on the 2,000-year-old Greek-style Segesta Ancient Theatre. Built into the mountainside with a stage facing a vast valley, the historic amphitheatre will host U-Theatre’s fusion of drumming, martial arts, and physical movement—a performance exploring strength, stillness, and awareness within an ancient relic.

Last year, U-Theatre made its debut European tour, visiting Rome, Catania, Athens, Paris, and Sofia. A viewer at the ancient Roman Theatre in Catania was deeply moved, saying, 'U-Theatre breathed new soul into ancient stones.' This transcendent feedback inspired an Italian team to produce a documentary capturing U-Theatre’s creative journey across Europe.

Mountain Mist Drifts from Paris to Europe—Hearing Inner Echoes in Silence

'Night Mountain Mist,' which premiered internationally at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris last year and sold out all four performances, will continue its journey to cultural cities such as Vienna, Prague, and Dresden. Inspired by the atmosphere of mountain forests at dusk, the piece weaves drumbeats, bodies, and silence into a slow, mist-like stage time-space, guiding audiences into a meditative flow.

In contrast to exuberant drumming, 'Night Mountain Mist' is more like an inward journey. Dancers move through light and shadow; drumbeats echo like distant mountain reverberations or close like heartbeats. As audiences gaze at the stage, they also rediscover the sound of their own breathing.

Walking the Streets of Vienna—Each Step a Bodily Practice

This year, U-Theatre will hold its first 'Mindful Walk' in Vienna, inviting local residents to experience the troupe’s 30+ years of bodily discipline and life aesthetics through walking, meditation, and drumming.

'Mindful Walk' is not a typical city tour. It emphasizes slowing down, calming the breath, and sensing the connection between body and land. As this practice from Taiwan enters Vienna’s streets, the city transforms from a tourist backdrop into a roofless theatre. Participants shift from passive spectators to active contributors in cultural exchange.

Encounters Beyond the Stage—Art Transcends Language into Understanding

In addition to theatre performances, the tour includes post-show talks, workshops, and 'Mindful Walks' to deepen engagement. European audiences won’t just watch—they’ll participate bodily, gaining deeper insight into the Eastern mind-body culture U-Theatre embodies.

U-Theatre believes art is not merely stage performance, but a deep exchange across languages, cultures, and life experiences. As drumbeats echo in ancient theatres, museums, and city streets, Taiwan’s culture is heard and seen by more people—not loudly, but with quiet determination.

U-Theatre expresses gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for continuously promoting Taiwanese culture globally, and to corporate partners such as Wistron, EVA Airways, and Fuheng Electronics, as well as long-time supporters. Every act of support allows the drumbeats from Taiwan’s mountains to cross oceans and continue resonating on the world stage.
