In response to the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on April 28, Japan's Defense Minister Shingo Kono announced today that the Self-Defense Forces will dispatch a support vessel capable of providing bathing, accommodation, and meal services to the disaster area.
During today's Disaster Response Headquarters meeting at the Ministry of Defense, Kono stated, "As of April 29, the Self-Defense Forces have deployed 4,600 personnel for disaster relief. We have now added 500 more, bringing the total to 5,100 personnel actively engaged in rescue operations."
Kono further explained, "To proactively implement 'proactive support,' we had previously prepared to dispatch a vessel offering bathing, accommodation, and dining services. Last night, following a support request from Kumamoto Prefecture, we began preparing to sail the vessel—currently docked in Hyogo Prefecture—to Yatsushiro Port. The vessel is equipped with large public baths and other facilities, capable of serving approximately 700 people."
Additionally, four Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels carrying drinking water and other relief supplies have entered Yatsushiro Port and are preparing to distribute supplies to affected residents.
Kono added, "The four vessels arrived at Yatsushiro Port this morning and have unloaded essential living supplies. These will now be delivered progressively to disaster victims. We will respond swiftly to the needs of those affected and fully commit to providing all necessary daily support."
The deployment underscores Japan's rapid military-civilian coordination in disaster response, leveraging specialized assets to address immediate humanitarian needs in the aftermath of major seismic events.
