The prototype submarine Hai Kun, part of Taiwan's Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) program, set sail again for sea trials on the morning of the 30th.
Experts speculate that Hai Kun entered Zuoying Naval Base after observing an additional harbor pilot—likely from Zuoying—onboard during its departure on the 29th. This suggests preparations for familiarization with the return route and logistical support ahead of delivery.
Hai Kun conducted consecutive sea trials on the 29th and 30th. Military expert and理事长 of the Taiwan Security Development Association, Chi Tung-yin, noted that recent typhoons had delayed the testing schedule, resulting in a more intensive testing period over the past two weeks, with repeated verification of the same test items.
Chi stated, "Repeated testing ensures system and equipment stability, which is a positive outcome." Preparations for endurance testing are more extensive and require thorough pre-testing, but it is unlikely to occur on the 31st. A higher possibility exists for next week.
Chi pointed out that an extra pilot was seen aboard Hai Kun during its 29th departure, likely from Zuoying Naval Base, leading to the inference that the submarine had indeed entered the base for pre-delivery preparations.
"It appears Hai Kun is preparing to return to Zuoying Naval Base, making logistical arrangements in advance," Chi said. "The submarine has now entered its final testing phase, and delivery is drawing closer. Endurance and deep-diving tests are expected next week, with CSBC Corporation and the Navy advancing step by step under safety-first principles."
Regarding the delivery timeline, Defense Minister Koo Li-hsiung stated during a legislative session on the 20th: "Hai Kun is currently undergoing submerged testing, with safety and quality as top priorities. Deep-water diving tests will follow. No specific delivery deadline has been set, and external claims of an August-end or early-September handover are unfounded."
