Typhoon Baitong is affecting the peak summer travel season to Japan. As of today (4th), at least seven domestic property and casualty insurance companies have urgently announced the suspension of new applications for overseas travel inconvenience insurance or comprehensive travel insurance for trips to Japan during specific periods. This adjustment primarily impacts new policies not yet completed.

Seven Major Insurers Announce Suspension of Japan-Bound Insurance Coverage

Taian Insurance was the first to announce, suspending applications for comprehensive travel insurance to all of Japan from August 3rd for trips between August 6th and 9th. Hota Insurance followed, pausing overseas travel insurance (including travel inconvenience insurance) for Japan trips from August 6th to 8th.兆豐 Insurance blocked applications for overseas travel inconvenience insurance to Japan from August 7th to 10th.

Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance (Xin An) announced a suspension of applications for overseas travel inconvenience insurance covering trips to Okinawa, Japan, with policy periods from 5:30 PM on August 3rd to midnight on August 10th. Fubon Insurance stated that its adjustment affects overseas travel inconvenience insurance for trips to Japan from August 6th to 8th. Cathay Insurance announced it will not accept new travel inconvenience insurance applications for trips to Okinawa, Japan, from August 6th to 8th. Finally, Wang Wang Union suspended applications for overseas travel inconvenience insurance effective from August 6th to 9th for trips to Okinawa, Japan.

If the typhoon's path changes, insurance measures will be adjusted accordingly.

Insuring After Typhoon Warning? Wang Wang Union Warns of Potential Denial of Claims

Wang Wang Union issued a special warning: 'If a policy is purchased after the Central Weather Administration issues a maritime typhoon alert, subsequent flight delays or itinerary changes caused by the typhoon may fall under special exclusions in the insurance contract.' For existing policies already in force, claims and coverage will generally be assessed according to the original contract terms.
