However, Japanese stationery giant Tombow recently shared a practical piece of trivia on social media, revealing the essential function of the paper wrapper on erasers — and it’s sparked a wave of online discussion.
Why Do Erasers Have Paper Wrappers? The Real Reason Explained by a Stationery Leader
Tombow, a well-known Japanese stationery brand, posted on X (formerly Twitter) explaining that common plastic erasers contain a key ingredient: “plasticizers.” If these erasers come into prolonged direct contact with other petroleum-based plastic items — such as plastic rulers, pencil cases, or drawer dividers — a “migration phenomenon” occurs due to concentration differences. This causes the eraser and surrounding plastic items to dissolve and fuse together.
Since paper is not derived from petroleum, plasticizers cannot transfer onto its surface. Manufacturers therefore wrap erasers in paper as a protective barrier to prevent this chemical interaction. After the post went live, many users responded with relief, saying things like, “No wonder my eraser stuck to my ruler after I removed the wrapper,” or “As a kid, my plastic pencil case got stained because I didn’t use the paper cover — it left black marks!”

Beyond the secret of the paper wrapper, the evolution of the eraser is also fascinating. Funpark Children's Book Dream Factory shared on Facebook that before erasers existed, humans used surprisingly luxurious methods to correct pencil marks — specifically, they used “bread” to wipe away graphite.
Famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci and many ancient painters reportedly used dried, hardened pieces of bread as a primitive form of eraser. While bread worked reasonably well at removing pencil marks, using a valuable food resource as a daily art supply was both extravagant and inconvenient.
From Bread to Vulcanized Rubber: The Evolution of Erasers That Changed Writing History
In 1770, a breakthrough occurred. British chemist Joseph Priestley discovered that natural rubber from South America had excellent erasing properties. That same year, British engineer Edward Nairne accidentally picked up a lump of natural rubber instead of bread while working and was amazed by its ability to cleanly remove pencil marks. He then began mass-producing and selling the world’s first “rubber erasers.”
However, early natural rubber erasers had a flaw: they didn’t produce shavings. Instead, they absorbed graphite dirt onto their surface, making them dirtier with each use. This problem persisted until 1839, when “vulcanized rubber” technology was invented. By adding sulfur, plastic, and vegetable oil to the raw material, researchers greatly improved the eraser’s stability and durability. More importantly, the new formulation allowed the eraser to generate shavings that carried away dirt — leading to the modern eraser we know and use today.
