Min Aung Hlaing has been sanctioned for his role in the 2017 Rohingya expulsion. After a controversial election in April, he became president and stepped down as military chief. With China's pressure and support, the military government has regained the upper hand against anti-government forces. Inside Myanmar, pro-democracy movements continue, and many refugees have fled to Mae Sot on the Thai border. BBC reporters visited the area and reported on the harsh conditions of the refugees.
