When buying a car after retirement, speed and performance take a back seat to long-term reliability. For many seniors, a vehicle that’s easy to get in and out of, comfortable to drive, inexpensive to repair, and fuel-efficient matters far more than luxurious features.
U.S. financial media outlet GoBankingRates compiled advice from automotive experts to recommend four high-value vehicles ideal for retirees. These models are renowned for their durability, with some capable of surpassing 300,000 kilometers without major breakdowns—making them perfect companions for post-career life.
Honda CR-V: A Durable SUV Staple, Routinely Driven Over 320,000 Kilometers
For retirees who prefer a higher seating position, compact SUVs often provide easier access and better visibility than traditional sedans. This makes the Honda CR-V a top pick among experts. Most trims offer all-wheel drive, further enhancing safety during rainy conditions or long-distance travel.
Alan Gelfand, owner of German Car Depot and a veteran automotive technician, says the CR-V uses a powertrain that has been proven over decades in the marketplace, resulting in relatively low maintenance needs. "Many owners drive their CR-Vs well past 200,000 miles (about 320,000 kilometers), demonstrating exceptional durability," he notes.
The 2025 Honda CR-V has a starting MSRP of approximately $30,100 (around NT$950,000) in the U.S.
Toyota Camry: The Classic Sedan Choice, Balancing Comfort and Reliability
For those who favor traditional four-door sedans, the Toyota Camry remains a popular choice among retirees. Having endured decades of market testing, the Camry is famous for its durability and high reliability ratings. Its comfortable ride and stable handling have earned it consistent praise over the years.
Ruth Calkins-Schmidt, CEO of automotive information service Find By Plate, points out that the Camry offers convenient entry and exit, excellent visibility, and suspension tuning that balances comfort and support—effectively reducing driver fatigue on long trips.
The 2025 Camry starts at around $28,400 (approximately NT$900,000) in the U.S., with several trims still priced under $30,000 (around NT$950,000).
Toyota Prius: Outstanding Fuel Efficiency Reduces Post-Retirement Ownership Costs
With limited fixed income after retirement, fuel expenses become a crucial factor in car purchasing decisions. The Toyota Prius, leveraging mature hybrid technology, has long been the poster child for fuel-efficient vehicles.
According to Kelley Blue Book, the Prius averages 49 to 57 miles per gallon—roughly 20.8 to 24.2 kilometers per liter—outperforming most rivals in its class.
Beyond saving on gas, the Prius inherits Toyota’s hallmark durability, making it a go-to choice for retirees who want both economy and reliability. The 2025 model starts at about $33,375 (around NT$1.06 million).
Lexus ES: Luxury and Comfort Without the Fear of High Repair Bills
For those wishing to enjoy a more luxurious retirement driving experience, the Lexus ES is the experts’ recommended premium sedan.
"The Lexus ES delivers a quiet cabin, superior ride quality, and comprehensive active safety technologies," says Ruth Calkins-Schmidt. "It matches the refinement of many European luxury brands, but its maintenance and repair costs remain relatively affordable, avoiding long-term financial strain."
The 2025 Lexus ES has a starting MSRP of approximately $43,435 (around NT$1.38 million) in the U.S.
