With Typhoon 'Kujira' approaching, farmers in Wufeng Township, Hsinchu County, are conducting emergency harvests of their pears, fearing market stagnation. Legislative Yuan member Hsu Hsin-ying responded to reports from Wufeng Township Mayor Chiu Wei-shu about the farmers’ plight by launching an urgent appeal on Facebook on the morning of the 8th, calling for help under the slogan 'Save Wufeng Pears.' She is urging businesses, associations, and kind-hearted citizens across the Hsinchu Science Park and throughout Taiwan to assist through purchase commitments.
Hsu recalled that in July, Typhoon 'Bavi' severely damaged mountainous areas including Jianshi and Wufeng, striking during the peach harvest season. At that time, farmers were forced to harvest in heavy rain. Hsu immediately initiated a purchase campaign, mobilizing enterprises, groups, and supportive friends. She personally coordinated the purchase of 1,000 boxes with her family and friends.
Hsu emphasized that Wufeng pears are known for their refreshing sweetness—a result of indigenous farmers’ meticulous efforts involving repeated fertilization, fruit thinning, and bagging. These pears are a primary source of income for local farming households. However, after already suffering losses from Typhoon 'Bavi,' they now face another emergency harvest. To prevent their hard work from being washed away, farmers are racing against time to pick as many pears as possible before the next storm hits.
'This isn’t just a sweet fruit—it’s a warm force of support helping indigenous farmers endure natural disasters,' said Hsu. 'When we buy a box of fruit, it means a year’s livelihood for these farmers.' She encourages enterprises in the Hsinchu Science Park, major social groups, and the general public to prioritize purchasing Wufeng pears, offering direct and tangible support to indigenous communities.
