At the Atomic Bomb Peace Memorial Ceremony recently held in Nagasaki City, Japan, an issue arose regarding the seating arrangement for the Taiwanese representative, leading to the boycott of the ceremony by Taiwan's representative to Japan, Li Yi-Yang. In response, Japanese Restoration Party Senator Ishihara issued a series of statements on X, highly praising the action of the Taiwan Representative Office to resolutely boycott the ceremony to protect national dignity. Mr. Ishihara criticized the fact that the Taiwanese representative, who participated with a sense of mourning for the victims of the atomic bomb, was treated unfairly, and emphasized that Japanese politicians and diplomats should learn from this. As the secretary-general of the cross-party 'Thought on Peace and Stability in the Taiwan Strait Parliamentary Members Association,' he expressed indignation at the serious discourtesy of the Nagasaki municipal government and apologized to Taiwanese friends, while pledging to work for the deepening of Japan-Taiwan friendship.
Mr. Ishihara strongly criticized the Nagasaki municipal government for taking discourteous actions towards Taiwan, a pro-Japanese country, in order to curry favor with China, while Taiwan's political and non-political sectors were fully supporting the Kumamoto earthquake. He stated that it was shameful for Nagasaki City to humiliate Taiwan in order to curry favor with China, and that it was an extremely lowly act.
Furthermore, Japanese politicians and celebrities also criticized the Nagasaki municipal government. Shimada Yoichi, a special advisor to the Japanese Conservative Party and former member of the House of Representatives, criticized the mayor of Nagasaki for emphasizing peace and nuclear disarmament while succumbing to pressure from China, which threatens peace in the Taiwan Strait and aims to become a nuclear superpower. He stated that it was extremely shameful not to allow the Taiwanese representative to sit in the diplomatic delegation seat.
Famous plastic surgeon Takasu Katsuyuki also stated that, despite the Japanese government recognizing Taiwan as a community of shared destiny, the actions of Nagasaki City were tantamount to making the Taiwanese brothers lose face. He emphasized that the past should not be taken lightly and that a convincing explanation must be given. As a Japanese person, he also apologized from the bottom of his heart to Taiwanese friends and called for a satisfactory explanation.
