Air China's flight CA723, operating from Beijing Capital Airport to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, will be operated for the first time by China's domestically produced passenger aircraft, the C919. Previously, this scheduled route was operated by Boeing 737 aircraft. This marks the C919's first operation on an international route, breaking through its previous framework of primarily serving domestic flights.
The C919 development project was first approved by the Chinese Communist Party in 2007. In 2008, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) officially began development. The aircraft was assembled and rolled out in 2015 and successfully completed its maiden flight in May 2017. From project approval to its first international flight, 19 years have passed.
The naming of the C919 carries symbolic meaning. 'C' stands for China, '9' symbolizes 'eternity' (a lucky number in Chinese culture), and '19' refers to its maximum seating capacity of 190 passengers. The C919 can accommodate up to 168 seats, surpassing the mainstream 150-seat category in commercial aviation. Its maximum range is 5,555 kilometers, and the fuselage is wider than comparable Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 models.
Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, the C919 features a baseline all-economy layout of 168 seats and a mixed-class configuration of 158 seats, positioning it directly against the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
To test the C919's safety, bird strike tests were conducted during development. Engineers used a 1.8-kilogram live chicken as a 'bird projectile,' launching it via cannon at 180 meters per second to impact the windshield, cockpit roof, and left and right side panels. The aircraft passed all tests under high safety standards.
The C919 is a medium-to-short-haul commercial airliner with a baseline all-economy layout of 168 seats and a mixed-class layout of 158 seats, targeting the same market segment as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
On August 12, Air China's CA723 departs Beijing Capital Airport at 15:00 and arrives in Ulaanbaatar at 17:15. The return flight, CA724, departs Ulaanbaatar at 18:30 and lands in Beijing at 20:35. Each leg takes 2 hours and 15 minutes.
The distance between Beijing and Ulaanbaatar is approximately 1,500 kilometers—four times the distance between London and Paris (380 km). The deployment of the C919 on an international route signifies that it has accumulated sufficient maintenance and operational experience on domestic routes, paving the way for broader international expansion.
