Meals taste better when shared! Taiwan Life Insurance partnered with Taiwan’s largest mature-age media, CommonWealth 50+, to jointly release the 'Joyful Aging Friendly Dining Survey.' The findings show that over half (50.4%) of seniors are in a state of solitary dining or elderly-shared meals; 50.4% of seniors frankly admit they 'eat casually when dining alone'; nearly six in ten (58.4%) believe that 'dining together' most effectively stimulates appetite, clearly indicating that only through family companionship, community support, and friendly services can seniors truly escape lonely dining tables and eat healthily.
2026 Joyful Aging Friendly Forum Survey – Multi-generational Households Face Hidden Crisis of Invisible Solitary Dining
Over Half Eat Casually When Dining Alone
Taiwan Life Insurance has conducted research on joyful aging-friendly topics for five consecutive years. This year’s focus was on dining accessibility, and the data shows that the most basic daily act of eating has become a new challenge for healthy aging. More than half (50.4%) of seniors admitted they 'eat casually when dining alone,' a higher proportion than those citing 'laziness in meal preparation' (44.2%) or 'poor dental condition or deterioration' (16.7%). Further cross-analysis revealed that although 53% of seniors live in two- or multi-generational households, over one-fifth (21.5%) dine alone or only with their spouse, creating an 'under one roof, different table' phenomenon of invisible solitary dining. In a super-aged society, barriers to senior dining go beyond aging or nutritional issues—the key lies in companionship. Long-term solitary diners generally have lower dietary quality and food diversity, increasing frailty risks—an alarming signal that cannot be ignored in healthy aging.

Over Eighty Percent of Seniors Feel Dining Out Is Unfriendly
In addition to the warning signs of solitary dining, unfriendly dining-out and shopping environments also hinder senior nutrition. As high as 82% of seniors reported difficulties dining out; over four in ten (42%) felt that 'menu offerings do not meet needs,' mainly due to unsuitable flavors or unbalanced nutrition; another 42% perceived 'unfriendly environment or service' (e.g., rude staff, noisy or dim restaurants). Moreover, in today’s digital era where everyone uses smartphones, QR code scanning for ordering has become widespread, yet it poses a technological barrier for seniors aged 70 and above (referred to as '70+'), with half stating 'digital ordering is inconvenient,' citing reasons such as inability to scan QR codes or screens being too small. Even home cooking isn’t necessarily easier—nearly six in ten (57.3%) found meal prep, cooking, and cleaning too laborious, and nearly three in ten (28.8%) felt physically unable to shop. Among them, 26.1% of 70+ seniors felt 'ingredient labeling is unclear and packaging text is too small,' making it insufficiently senior-friendly.

Dietary Misconceptions Higher Among Senior Men Than Women
The survey also uncovered many dietary misconceptions among seniors, especially prevalent among men. Forty percent (40.4%) of senior men believed that 'older people should eat less due to reduced activity,' or that 'eating plain boiled vegetables without seasoning prevents chronic diseases'; 31.8% thought 'eating more fruit than rice is healthier.' Medical experts warn that blindly reducing food intake or inadequate consumption of fats and high-quality protein could instead trigger hyponatremia, accelerate sarcopenia, and even increase frailty risks.
'New, Speed, Food, Simple' Approach to Healthy Eating – Strengthening the 'Power of Eating' in a Super-Aged Society
To enhance joyful aging-friendly dining, Taiwan Life Insurance proposed the 'New, Speed, Food, Simple' equation. Over nine in ten (91.2%) seniors expressed interest in a one-stop healthy living concierge service; 54.4% wished for a smart health dining map to quickly locate nearby friendly restaurants or supermarkets; 61.2% showed interest in insurance products offering discounts for health-promoting activities, indicating growing awareness of health investment. Additionally, over one-third (33.3%) of seniors have experienced communal dining at community hubs—avoiding self-cooking while participating in activities, enjoying both delicious food and human connection. However, nearly seven in ten (66.7%) seniors remain uninterested in dining with strangers, feeling uncomfortable; approximately four in ten (33.4%) don’t know where to find communal dining opportunities, suggesting the government needs to strengthen outreach efforts.
