A shocking mega-deal has been announced involving the NBA's prestigious Los Angeles Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers). Prominent American entrepreneur Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger have jointly acquired the team for over $12 billion (approximately NT$380 billion), setting a new world record for transaction values in professional sports franchises.
Just last October, former majority shareholder Mark Walter had purchased the team’s stake at a valuation of $10 billion. However, within mere months, the Lakers’ value skyrocketed, leading to this unprecedented transaction.
Buyer Background and Strategic Expansion into Sports
The new ownership group has drawn significant market attention. Bob Iger, aged 75, served twice as CEO of The Walt Disney Company and officially stepped down in March this year. Josh Kushner is the founder of venture capital firm Thrive Capital and health insurance company Oscar Health, and is also the younger brother of Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prior to finalizing the Lakers purchase, Kushner and Iger were actively pursuing the operating rights for an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas. However, when an opportunity arose to acquire the Lakers, they swiftly shifted focus and successfully secured this globally influential top-tier brand.
In a joint statement released via ESPN, the new owners said: "As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored to become the new stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers are one of the most iconic sports brands in the world, and we hold immense respect for the leadership and vision of Dr. Jerry Buss and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build upon this strong foundation, maintain the highest level of competitiveness, and fully serve this exceptional team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."
Former Shareholder Under Tax Investigation and Power Struggle Within the Buss Family
The seller, Mark Walter, is not only CEO of Guggenheim Partners but also a major shareholder of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. Reports indicate that Walter is currently under federal investigation in the United States for alleged tax fraud, prompting widespread speculation in foreign media about the timing of this equity divestment.
In his farewell statement, Walter expressed emotion: "Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the greatest honors of my life. It has been an extraordinary investment, but what I cherish most is this community, the fans, and the city that treats this team as family. I thank Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the entire support staff for welcoming me during this period. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles. I firmly believe the team’s best days are still ahead."
Since 'Dr. Buss,' Jerry Buss, passed away in 2013, ownership of the team has been inherited by his children, with Jeanie Buss serving long-term as the team’s Governor. During the Buss family’s tenure, the Lakers won 11 of their 17 NBA championships, most recently the 2020 'bubble campus' championship. According to related reports, even after Walter’s earlier investment and now this change in ownership, Jeanie Buss is expected to continue serving as team Governor for at least five more years, ensuring operational stability.
Star Player Overhaul — Lakers Enter the 'Dončić Era'
Beyond the management shake-up, the Lakers are also undergoing a major transformation in their player roster. The eight-year reign of 'King' LeBron James has come to an end this summer. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer has joined the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year contract.
With James’ departure, the Lakers have officially transitioned to a new era centered around next-generation superstar Luka Dončić, building a fresh lineup around him. This record-breaking team acquisition marks the official beginning of a new chapter for this purple-and-gold dynasty, both on and off the court.
