Google is not only putting Gemini in smartphones but is now bringing AI to your wrist. Today (13th), Google launched the Pixel Watch 5 in Taiwan, introducing Gemini Intelligence, Google Health Coach, and a new Health Guardian (Health Guardian) feature, aiming to transform smartwatches from merely 'recording' fitness and health data to actively analyzing user conditions and offering personalized recommendations. The new device starts at NT$12,990, with pre-orders available immediately and official launch on August 20.
The most anticipated new features include blood pressure trend and insulin resistance trend tracking. However, Google emphasizes that these functions are for general fitness and wellness purposes only, not medical diagnostic tools, and cannot be considered real-time clinical readings for blood pressure or blood glucose.
Huang Shu-Yu, Senior Product Manager for Wearables and Health Devices at Google, stated that this year’s Pixel Watch aims to be 'smarter and more proactive' than its predecessor. Beyond helping users understand their body data, the goal is for AI to assist in determining what actions to take next.
The watch doesn’t wait for you to check—it actively displays key information. Google extends its 'proactive AI' concept from smartphones to the Pixel Watch 5. With Gemini Intelligence, the watch delivers important information at the right moment based on context. For example, when arriving at an airport, it can directly show flight details; during morning commutes, it may proactively alert users to the remaining number of stops.
Users can simply raise their wrist to summon Gemini, asking the AI to set timers, start workout modes, or retrieve restaurant reservation details from Gmail. According to the company, some common operations can be processed directly on the device using on-device AI, enabling low-latency performance even when the phone is completely offline.
To support these features, the Pixel Watch 5 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 accelerator processor and a high-efficiency dual-chip architecture. Memory is 50% greater than the previous generation, CPU performance is up 12%, and overall operation speed is improved by 20%.
Another key role of AI in the Pixel Watch 5 is health management. Google’s newly launched Health Coach integrates users’ fitness goals, sleep quality, heart rate variability (HRV), and daily recovery status to provide dynamically adjusted workout recommendations. For instance, if the system detects poor recovery or excessively high ambient temperatures, it might suggest switching a high-intensity run to indoor yoga.
Huang shared a personal use case during the launch event. She told Health Coach she wanted to improve her golf performance but had limited time to practice due to a busy work schedule. The system then recommended 15 minutes of daily stretching, aiming to indirectly enhance her swing performance by improving flexibility.
In other words, Google aims for Health Coach to go beyond generating static workout plans, instead dynamically adjusting exercise strategies based on daily physical conditions and life schedules.
The Pixel Watch 5 also introduces the Health Guardian feature, designed to detect subtle, long-term changes users might otherwise overlook. According to Google, the new watch can track trends in blood pressure and insulin resistance, integrating this data with heart rate, blood oxygen levels, respiratory rate, and other health metrics into the Google Health app.
Huang noted that observing overall trends over a month or longer makes it easier to detect subtle bodily changes compared to viewing isolated daily readings. Google Health will periodically generate trend summaries to help users adjust their lifestyles earlier.
However, it’s crucial to distinguish between 'health trends' and 'medical diagnostics.' Google clearly states that blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends, and high/low heart rate alerts are intended solely for general fitness and wellness use. They cannot be used for diabetes or hypertension screening, do not provide real-time clinical data, and therefore should not inform medication or treatment adjustments.
Google Maps and Weather Data Used to Calibrate GPS
In addition to AI health features, Google integrates its own Maps and weather data into the Pixel Watch’s positioning system. The Pixel Watch 5 uses 3D building models from Google Maps to simulate satellite signal paths and connects to global weather observation data to correct satellite readings based on local atmospheric conditions, reducing positioning interference caused by building reflections and weather factors.
Google claims that in dense urban environments or other challenging conditions, the Pixel Watch 5’s GPS positioning accuracy is twice that of the previous generation.
Regarding sleep, the new model adds a sleep breathing quality index, analyzing minute changes in blood oxygen levels every minute during the night. The 'Smart Wake' feature attempts to wake users during a more suitable light sleep phase, starting 30 minutes before the set alarm time, based on heart rate and subtle body movements.
The Pixel Watch 5 comes in two sizes—41mm and 45mm—with both Wi-Fi and LTE versions. The 41mm Wi-Fi model is priced at NT$12,990, LTE at NT$15,990; the 45mm Wi-Fi model at NT$13,990, and LTE at NT$16,990. All models launch in Taiwan on August 20, with a free 3-month subscription to Google Health Premium included with purchase.
