Amplified southwest winds are driving moist air from the South China Sea into Taiwan, causing highly unstable weather conditions across the island. The Central Weather Administration has issued a torrential rain advisory for southern regions, urging the public to prepare for short-duration intense rainfall. Northern and eastern areas will experience soaring daytime temperatures, with severe thunderstorms expected in the afternoons. Meteorological experts warn this unstable weather pattern will continue through next week, and with a tropical disturbance developing near Guam, ongoing monitoring of future weather changes is essential.

Southwest winds batter southern Taiwan—beware of torrential rain! Northern and eastern regions hit 37°C before rainfall

Meteorological expert Wu Derong, in his column for the Foundation for Meteorological Applications, noted that today (15th), enhanced southwest winds are carrying abundant moisture. Isolated brief showers or thunderstorms are occurring in windward areas of central and southern Taiwan, with southern regions needing to strictly guard against short-duration torrential rain. There is also a chance of localized heavy rain in central Taiwan. In the afternoons, rainfall will expand across Taiwan, with northern regions and mountainous areas in Yilan likely to experience localized heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds.

Temperatures remain muggy before rainfall, with highs generally ranging from 32 to 35°C. Northern and eastern areas may reach 36 to 37°C. The Central Weather Administration warns that UV levels are particularly high around noon, urging the public to apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and prevent heatstroke when outdoors.

Low-pressure troughs to take over from Sunday! Beware of intense convective weather in the afternoons

From tomorrow (16th) to next Saturday (22nd), Taiwan's weather environment will gradually shift from southwest winds to the influence of a low-pressure trough. With abundant moisture still present, atmospheric conditions will remain highly unstable, with scattered rainfall possible across all regions. Afternoons will be especially prone to intense convection, bringing sudden heavy rain, lightning, and strong gusty winds.

From next Monday (17th) to next Thursday (20th), moisture will move in from the sea east of Taiwan, leading to isolated brief showers in southern and eastern regions. Mountainous areas south of Hsinchu and in eastern Taiwan should remain alert for localized heavy rain in the afternoons.

Tropical disturbance brewing near Guam! Predicted path heads toward waters south of Japan

In addition to rainfall from the low-pressure trough, meteorological expert Wu Derong noted that the latest model simulations indicate a tropical disturbance is expected to develop near Guam starting Thursday (20th). The system will move in a north-northwest direction, reaching waters south of Japan around the following Monday (24th). Currently, it is assessed that this system may not directly affect Taiwan, but as this is a longer-range forecast, its development and potential path changes require continuous observation.
