A major fire struck the renowned religious site Zhinan Temple in Taipei on the evening of the 24th. The blaze originated in the Lingxiao Palace, a structure with nearly 60 years of history, quickly spreading due to its wooden interior. The building was engulfed in flames and thick smoke. The Taipei Fire Department dispatched 43 fire trucks, 114 firefighters, and 18 volunteer firefighters, bringing the fire under control by 10:07 PM, approximately two hours after the initial report at 8:00 PM. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities occurred.
Post-fire assessments revealed that the first floor was completely destroyed, with about one-third of the second floor damaged. Interior decorations, structural elements, and religious artifacts were severely charred, with debris scattered across the site. The cause of the fire remains unknown. While possibilities such as electrical faults or incense ignition are being considered, a formal investigation by fire authorities is required to determine the origin.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated on social media that Zhinan Temple holds deep memories for many citizens and has dispatched Deputy Mayor Chang Wen-te to assess the situation. The city government and temple authorities have initiated discussions on structural safety evaluations and future reconstruction plans. Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya arrived at the scene, thanking firefighters for their efforts and pledging to advocate for resources in the council.
Smoke from the fire drifted westward due to wind, potentially affecting Wenshan District in Taipei and Xindian, Zhonghe, and Yonghe in New Taipei City. However, air quality monitoring showed no significant abnormalities, and no health impacts have been reported. Moving forward, structural safety inspections and fire cause analysis will guide decisions on partial restoration or full reconstruction. For devotees, the restoration of Lingxiao Palace—a spiritual and cultural landmark—remains a critical challenge.
