Our company endorses April Dream, aiming to make April 1st a day to share dreams. This press release is the dream of "Surugaya Honpo Co., Ltd."
In 2026, Surugaya Honpo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Hitoshi Maruyama), celebrating its 30th anniversary, offers heartfelt gratitude to the people of this town from the platform of Enoden Kamakura Station. It was the local community that nurtured the small croquettes, handmade by our predecessor in a tonkatsu restaurant, calling them "Kamakura's specialty." For the next 30 years, we aim to repay this kindness through food-based contributions to the community. We will continue to protect the taste of Kamakura, aspiring for a future where local children can proudly say, "My town has delicious, boast-worthy croquettes."
Reasons and Inspiration for the Dream Our dream's origin goes back 30 years to the time of our founding. Our predecessor, Isamu Maruyama, created nameless croquettes through trial and error, driven by a desire to value ingredients. The smiles of local customers who ate them and called them "Kamakura Croquettes" were the beginning of everything.
Even in difficult times, we were encouraged by the voices of people passing through Enoden Station, allowing us to maintain our shop's noren (curtain) to this day. That is why, at this 30th-anniversary milestone, our dream is not about expanding sales, but about "embodying gratitude to Kamakura." We believe that connecting the spirit of "mottainai" (avoiding waste), which utilizes food scraps, to solving community issues and food education for the next generation of children, is our sincere way of repaying Kamakura, our namesake.
◆ Kamakura Croquette History https://www.surugaya-honpo.com/user_data/history
Around the Time of Founding: Rushing to Tour the Country Driven by the desire to spread the taste of these local croquettes nationwide, all our employees toured various parts of the country for promotional events. The smiles of each customer who tasted Kamakura Croquettes for the first time during sampling are unforgettable to this day. This experience encouraged us and deepened our confidence in the product's taste. We strongly resolved to preserve this recipe forever, and we have done so until today.
Our Activities So Far Kamakura Croquette 30th Anniversary Local Appreciation Sale To commemorate the 30th anniversary of our flagship product, "Kamakura Croquette," and with the cooperation of Enoden Area Service Co., Ltd., we are holding a "30th Anniversary Local Appreciation Special Sale" for residents along the Enoden line at the Enoden Kamakura Station main store, located within the station premises, starting from March 9, 2026.
In gratitude for everyday support, two popular frozen sets, normally priced at 1,500 yen or more, are being sold at a special price of 1,000 yen (tax included) each. We welcome local residents at our store, which was just renovated in February. https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000003.000078124.html
Our Features Kamakura Croquette, which requires no sauce, stands out for the sweetness of onions slowly fried in beef fat and its creamy texture, and has been loved for many years as a travel companion. This taste, a pride of the town, was nurtured at the Enoden Kamakura Station main store, a symbolic place connecting tourists and local residents, and has now completely blended into the town of Kamakura.
While valuing that traditional recipe, we have evolved with a new endeavor: developing commercially available frozen foods as the "Easy Microwave Series." With proprietary technology that recreates the freshly fried crispy texture even when cooked in a microwave, we deliver the unchanged "local croquette taste" born in Kamakura to anywhere in the country.
Future Outlook Today, it has grown to be certified as a "Kamakura Recommended Product" as an item that evokes "Kamakura's essence," fostered by Kamakura's climate, history, and culture, and is now expanding nationwide as a local croquette brand of Kanagawa Prefecture. As we reach our 30th anniversary, we will embody our gratitude to the local community that has supported us. As it's our 30th anniversary, we've increasingly heard appreciative comments from customers who say they've been familiar with it since childhood. Eating is essential for the healthy development of children's minds and bodies. We will continue our product provision activities for local children's cafeterias, which we started with the desire to help bring smiles to all children.
Comment Representative Director / Hitoshi Maruyama Thanks to everyone, Surugaya Honpo's Kamakura Croquette has reached its 30th anniversary. Under the banner of Shonan Kamakura's local croquettes, our company has strived with our predecessor's teaching in mind: that food must lead to people's health and happiness. Our microwave croquettes and microwave minced cutlets, developed for frozen foods, are confident products that pursue the deliciousness of Kamakura Croquette using domestic main ingredients and limiting the use of additives. We will continue to strive to create products that leave a lasting impression and contribute to health.
