Takashimaya will hold the "Gaze at Nikawa - Reconsideration and Response" exhibition at three venues in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Animal glue, a traditional painting material for Japanese art, has not only created diverse expressions to this day but has also supported the continuous lineage of Japanese painting. In this exhibition, with Aguri Uchida as the supervisor, we will introduce highlights of research on the regions where traditional painting materials like animal glue have been produced, along with newly collected documents from recent years. Along with the display of materials, we will exhibit the practices of 37 contemporary artists who have created works using animal glue. Artists from various fields, including not only Japanese painting but also oil painting, sculpture, and photography, ranging from young talents to masters active across the country, will gather to display attractive works full of individuality created with animal glue. As Takashimaya approaches 120 years since the founding of its art department, we believe one of our roles is to look at the industries and people who support the production of artists who create a single piece of art, and to become a bearer of those techniques and activities to the next generation of creators.
