The 'Great Van Gogh Exhibition: Night Café Terrace,' bringing together masterpieces from the first half of Vincent van Gogh's career, opened on Friday, May 29, at the Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo.
Prior to the opening, a press preview was held where singer-songwriter Tatsuya Kitani, who created the exhibition's image song, appeared to discuss his creative process and his impressions of the artworks.
Kitani's favorite piece is 'Autumn Landscape,' painted during Van Gogh's Dutch period. Reflecting on Van Gogh’s correspondence to his brother Theo—describing the artist's struggle with the motif—Kitani identified with the trial-and-error process involved in creating a masterpiece.
The first verse of Kitani's song, 'Lungfish,' is featured on the exhibition’s audio guide, available for 700 yen (tax included).
