Think Nature Co., Ltd. (Urasoe, Okinawa; CEO Yasuhiro Kubota) has released new marine biodiversity and conservation maps on its 'J-BMP' platform. Utilizing ecological big data, these maps visualize biodiversity patterns across Japan's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The assessment categorizes Japan's seas into three habitats: coastal areas (within 10km of land, covering 14 taxa), offshore areas (depths over 200m, covering 5 taxa), and deep-sea areas (known taxa at depths over 200m). To identify priority areas for conservation and minimize extinction risks, the system uses Zonation, a spatial prioritization software developed by Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Atte Moilanen. The J-BMP platform, launched in 2020, helps municipalities and businesses understand their impact on marine biodiversity, enabling objective risk management and nature-positive investments. J-BMP previously won the 'Award for Works and Publications' from the Association of Japanese Map Historiographers. Maps can be accessed on their website.
