Toko Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Taito-ku, Tokyo), a liquor importer and wholesaler, will launch two types of limited edition single malt whiskies from Lindores Abbey Distillery, considered the birthplace of Scotch whisky, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, in limited quantities.
Two Limited Bottles Expressing Different Personalities, Honoring 15th Century Achievements
The two products to be released are "Lindores Single Malt Tinto 2025" (240 bottles imported to Japan), which uses new oak cask-matured spirit from the oak grown in the distillery's root location as its key component, and "Lindores Single Malt Friar John Cor Chapter 3" (120 bottles imported to Japan), which is a luxurious marriage (blend) of three different spirits in sherry casks. Both are limited edition bottles crafted in homage to the great achievements of the 15th-century monks, said to be the origin of Scotch whisky, and are characterized by their deep and complex flavors.
Product Overview
Product Name: Lindores Single Malt Tinto 2025
Alcohol Content: 49.4%
Volume: 700ml
Suggested Retail Price: 9,000 yen (excluding tax)
Total Imported to Japan: 240 bottles
This is a limited edition product following last year's first release. In honor of the Tironensian monks who founded Lindores Abbey in 1191, French oak trees from Thiron-Gardais in France, their former base, are used. Using spirit aged in new casks made from this oak as the key, a different recipe from last year has been adopted. This year, spirit from "rejuvenated casks" (refilled with fresh red wine) and spirit from bourbon casks have been vatted. The result is a rich and elegant whisky with flavors of dates, berry jam, and hazelnuts. It is noteworthy that for every oak tree felled, six are planted.
【Tasting Notes】
A rich aroma of dates layered with berry jam, with hints of roasted hazelnuts and sweet cinnamon. On the palate, rich vanilla ice cream and fruity raspberries emerge, followed by spices, golden syrup, and roasted hazelnuts reminiscent of freshly baked pastries, mingling with pleasant woody notes. It has a well-balanced and complex flavor with a silky smooth texture. The finish is long-lasting.
Product Overview
Product Name: Lindores Single Malt Friar John Cor Chapter 3
Alcohol Content: 60.2%
Volume: 700ml
Suggested Retail Price: 10,000 yen (excluding tax)
Total Imported to Japan: 120 bottles
Friar John Cor, who appears in a 1494 historical text, is a legendary figure credited with being the first to distill spirit (aqua vitae) from malt in Scotland. This is the third installment in a series honoring his achievements, composed of three spirits: Amontillado cask, Pedro Ximénez cask, and bourbon cask. After being vatted once, they are further married in refill sherry casks, revealing deeper and more complex flavors. Bottled at cask strength, natural color, and non-chill filtered.
【Tasting Notes】
Characterized by a sweet aroma, with notes of vanilla, treacle, apple, honey, dried fruits, and a hint of floral scent. It has a rich and distinctive flavor, starting with the dense sweetness of dark syrup, raisins, and dried figs, followed by flavors of dark chocolate, nuts, and sweet spices. The texture is smooth and silky. The finish is long, with lingering sweetness of chocolate fudge and cinnamon.
About Lindores Abbey Distillery
The oldest record concerning Scotch whisky dates back to 1494, when King James IV of Scotland ordered Friar John Cor to produce distilled spirit (aqua vitae) from barley malt. It is said that distillation took place at Lindores Abbey at this time. Drew Mackenzie Smith, the landowner, confirmed the remains of a still through archaeological investigation and subsequently established Lindores Abbey Distillery in 2017. Dr. Jim Swan, who passed away, was deeply involved in its establishment, incorporating techniques honed through consulting for distilleries worldwide, such as a distillation system combining one wash still and two spirit stills, and maturation in STR casks. Fermentation is exceptionally long, lasting 96-114 hours, extracting tropical flavors from the wash. The use of two spirit stills increases copper contact, removing off-flavors, while simultaneously, angling the lyne arm downwards achieves a robust spirit character.
