Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. ("Kawasaki Heavy Industries"), Tokyo Century Corporation ("Tokyo Century"), and Kyocera Communication Systems Co., Ltd. ("KCCS") have launched the second phase of their "Donation-Based Corporate PPA (In-House Power Generation Support Service)" ("the Service") utilizing a "solar carport (parking lot-mounted solar power generation equipment)" at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Seishin Works. The introduction of the Service using a solar carport is a first for Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries is accelerating the introduction of renewable energy as part of its efforts toward carbon neutrality. This project effectively utilizes the roof of the parking lot at the company's Seishin Works, installing 1,049.535 kW of new solar power generation panels as a solar carport. This not only promotes the introduction of renewable energy but also contributes to improving the comfort of employees using the parking lot by mitigating temperature rises inside vehicles through heat and light shielding effects, and enhancing convenience during rainy weather. It will be deployed as an advanced model case for introducing renewable energy that effectively utilizes business site land.
Furthermore, the introduction of the Service at the Seishin Works is the second instance, following the rooftop installation (first phase) in March 2023. As a whole, Kawasaki Heavy Industries has undertaken a total of four donation-based corporate PPA initiatives, utilizing a combined total of approximately 3.0 MW of solar-derived electricity.
Under the Service, Tokyo Century and KCCS take on the initial investment costs and procedures required to introduce the solar power generation equipment, enabling the introduction of a solar power generation system with "zero initial investment." In addition to using Kyocera Corporation's solar power generation systems, which have demonstrated long-term reliability by operating at high output for over 40 years, KCCS, which has a wealth of experience, will handle O&M (operation and maintenance).
Moreover, the service incorporates donations to public interest incorporated foundations and NPOs that promote the SDGs. Customers can freely select the donation recipients, and Tokyo Century covers the equivalent amount of the donation, offering numerous benefits for customers supporting the SDGs. As with the past three initiatives at Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Tokyo Century will make a donation to NPO Hyogo Mori no Club, a volunteer group engaged in forest building in Hyogo Prefecture, with the aim of preventing global warming and maintaining and improving biodiversity.
Going forward, through the further utilization of renewable energy and donations to organizations working towards achieving the SDGs, the companies will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society not only through energy decarbonization but also through more proactive environmental protection initiatives.
