In collaboration with Temple University Japan Campus (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo / hereafter TUJ) and BnA Hotel, TokyoDex will host a mural unveiling and opening event at BnA_WALL in Tokyo on April 22, 2026. This event serves as the culmination of the semester-long class 'Mural Art in Practice,' instructed by TokyoDex Representative Daniel Harris Rosen. Nine students from diverse international backgrounds produced and installed site-specific murals within actual environments.
The opening event, 'Fresh Paint (This&That Vol.49),' will be held from 19:30 to 23:00. From 19:45, there will be on-stage introductions by the student artists, followed by multiple live performances throughout the night.
Unlike traditional studio-based classes, 'Mural Art in Practice' is built around engaging directly with clients, physical spaces, and a public audience. Throughout the semester, students experience the entire mural production process—starting from concept building and drafting proposals, navigating real-world constraints like architecture, scale, and context, all the way to final on-site production.
Furthermore, to assist the transition from the proposal phase to large-scale actual production, the class incorporated studio-based guidance from guest mentor MAHARO. Interacting directly with students during the production period, MAHARO provided practical advice on expanding scale, composition, and material handling, supporting them in refining initial ideas into highly polished mural works.
Regarding his role in this project, MAHARO commented: 'When I was young, there was no one to teach us these things properly, and there were barely any places to paint on walls. I wish there had been a class like this, and I am very happy to be involved in nurturing the next generation of mural artists.'
A total of nine completed works will be displayed on the main wall of BnA_WALL and in the adjacent gallery space. Each piece is a modern interpretation of the Nihonbashi area, reflecting the distinct perspectives of the individual artists while being designed as a cohesive installation that unifies the visual experience of the entire space.
'While previous classes focused primarily on technical skills and how to apply them in the real world...'
