Toratani Co., Ltd. (Kahoku City, Ishikawa Prefecture) has announced the commencement of the 'Night Oxygen Flow Project – Phase 2' to investigate the reality of respiratory infrastructure during sleep. As the first phase, the company has released an analysis of how breathing acts as the 'primary engine of life.'
This analysis clarifies why respiratory quality determines the foundation of health. Breathing is not merely the exchange of air but a hierarchical engine driving the body. When breathing is deep, the causal line from oxygen supply and autonomic nerves to the internal environment (metabolism, immunity) functions smoothly. Conversely, shallow breathing leads to a gradual decline in all bodily functions.
The project identifies three factors that restrict breathing depth during sleep: 'changes in airway angle,' 'sinking of the thorax,' and 'diaphragmatic limitation'—collectively termed the 'Physics of 90-Degree Gravity Breathing.' Lying down changes the direction of gravity, making anyone prone to shallow breathing. The research also cites academic studies noting that Japanese people tend to have smaller jawbones, making them structurally susceptible to narrowed airways.
Toratani is systematizing this 'Breathing Physics' based on its 3D apparel design knowledge to improve sleep, posture, and metabolism. The company plans to continue sharing insights on how enhancing the quality of unconscious breathing can shape the future of health and longevity.
