The Toshima Mirai Culture Foundation held a five-session cultural college course titled 'Introduction to Ikkanbari: Traditional Craft of Decorating Bamboo Baskets with Washi Paper' at the Komagome Regional Culture Creation Hall. Under the guidance of Hiroko Sakamaki, an instructor from the Japan Handicraft Guidance Association, participants learned techniques ranging from applying washi paper to bamboo baskets to coating them with persimmon tannin. 'Ikkanbari' is a traditional Japanese craft where washi paper is layered onto bamboo or wooden baskets and finished with persimmon tannin for durability. A major appeal is the 'joy of nurturing' the item, as it develops a deep amber luster over time. In the latter half of the course, participants used their own cherished washi paper and fabrics to create two unique baskets. Due to the participants' enthusiasm, an additional workshop to create 'Ikkanbari bags' was decided, utilizing the activity time of the 'Nakayoshi Patchwork' group in Toshima Ward. In the post-course survey, 86% of participants expressed satisfaction, and all 21 attendees indicated they would like to participate in future courses at the hall.
