Japan Women's University Architecture and Design Department to Host Lecture: 'Art Nouveau in Brussels' on June 5 (Fri)

The Department of Architecture and Design at Japan Women's University (Bunkyo, Tokyo; President: Satoko Shinohara) will host a lecture titled 'Art Nouveau in Brussels: Recreating Architectural Heritage through 3D Restoration' on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Naruse Memorial Auditorium (Mejiro Campus).

This lecture is co-organized with the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium, with which the university has an academic partnership agreement. Expert lecturers will be invited from Belgium, including Dean Marcel Rabinowicz.

The lecture will focus on the latest research in digital restoration of architectural heritage in Brussels, specifically two iconic works: the 'Maison du Peuple' by Art Nouveau master architect Victor Horta, and the 'Stoclet House' designed by Josef Hoffmann, a key work of the Vienna Secession. Through videos and lectures, the event will demonstrate how 3D modeling contributes to the recording, understanding, and succession of architectural heritage, including buildings that have already been lost or are not open to the public. It will also examine the potential of the virtual aspects of such digital restorations for future research on historical buildings.

This event is part of the 'Brussels Week' (June 5–12), which commemorates the 160th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Belgium. All are welcome to attend.
