Valeo's 48V 2-speed switchable eAxle enables the first combination of bi-fuel (gasoline/LPG) technology with an affordable electric 4WD drivetrain.
This system meets European emissions targets by replacing mechanical components with an electric rear axle.
This globally unique 48V dual-speed system delivers high-performance power affordably, generating up to 1,800 Nm of torque to the rear wheels.
Valeo, a global leader in automotive technology, announces the market launch of vehicles equipped with its 48V 2-speed eAxle featuring a smart dog clutch. This 48V eAxle provides a practical solution to rising emissions costs associated with conventional 4WD systems. By replacing mechanical parts with more efficient electric drives, it offsets the excess fuel consumption of traditional 4x4 systems—enabling automakers to meet strict European standards while maintaining affordability.
This 48V 2-speed eAxle has been adopted in Dacia’s new 'Hybrid-G 150' powertrain, which will be deployed on the Dacia Duster, Bigster, and the upcoming Striker within the next few months.
Xavier Dupont, CEO of Valeo’s Power Division, said: 'We are proud that Valeo’s innovative 48V 2-speed eAxle has been selected as the core technology of Dacia’s new Hybrid-G 150 4x4 powertrain. This groundbreaking technology preserves the 4x4 DNA that defines the Duster while significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Our collaboration with Dacia highlights our ability to support partners in expanding electrification for the mass market and transitioning toward sustainable, safe, and all-terrain mobility.'
Resolving the Torque-Efficiency Trade-Off
Previously, low-cost electric axles had to compromise between low-speed torque and high-speed efficiency. This innovation, co-developed by Renault Group and Valeo, solves this challenge with a new two-speed architecture:
Extreme Off-Road Performance: A short gear ratio enables the system to deliver up to 1,800 Nm of rear-wheel torque, providing the powerful capability SUV customers expect for steep climbs and extreme terrain.
High-Speed Efficiency: The system seamlessly shifts to a long gear ratio, enabling efficient cruising at speeds up to 140 km/h.
Smart Dog Clutch Breakthrough: Co-developed with Renault Group, this system is based on a simple dog clutch with software-synchronized speed engagement, delivering cost-effective premium performance for entry-level vehicles.
Technical Breakthrough
Weighing 41 kg, this unit is the most powerful 48V rear electric powertrain on the market, delivering a peak output of 31 hp. Its compact design allows integration into existing B-segment platforms, offering a cost-effective solution to upgrade current mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) with electric rear-drive functionality.
100% Electric Urban Driving: With the 48V 2-speed eAxle and optimized software strategy, Dacia has achieved up to 60%* of urban driving in 100% electric mode for the Dacia Duster and Bigster.
Reliability: Verified under extreme conditions, the system does not compromise vehicle towing capacity or fording depth. It has been tested from -30°C in Sweden to 45°C in Spain.
By powering Dacia’s new Hybrid-G 150 4x4 powertrain, Valeo’s 48V eAxle sets a new standard for hybrid 4x4 mobility, proving that cutting-edge innovation can be made affordable without sacrificing off-road performance.
