Vstone Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, Representative Director: Shinobu Daiwa) will release the "4WDS Rover X120A-LB," a large model of their ROS 2 compatible research and development dolly robot. This model is equipped with a large capacity battery approximately three times the capacity of the standard model and features an independent four-wheel steering mechanism.

4WDS Rover X120A-LB

Main Features

The 4WDS Rover X120A-LB is a research and development dolly robot equipped with an independent steering mechanism for each of its four wheels, enabling omnidirectional movement despite using conventional wheels. With a large chassis capable of carrying approximately 120kg, it allows for ample operational margin even when equipped with various measurement instruments and computing devices.

This product is a battery capacity increased model of the base model "4WDS Rover X120A," featuring a battery capacity approximately three times larger than the base model. It can supply sufficient power for advanced processing and supports operation under a wide range of conditions.

With a payload capacity of approximately 120kg and a large capacity battery of 24V 60Ah, the 4WDS Rover X120A-LB can accommodate large equipment and mobile mechanisms on its upper surface. It can be equipped with robot arms, large payloads, advanced sensors, and their processing units, making it suitable as a base model for modern robotics research and application, going beyond the scope of simple AGVs or AMRs to serve as an avatar robot for remote control or a robot for physical AI utilization.

(1) Equipped with a large capacity Li-Fe battery for extended operating time

This product is equipped with a 1440Wh (24V 60Ah) Li-Fe battery. Compared to the base model 4WDS Rover X120A, the battery capacity has been increased by approximately three times.

Research and development dolly robots often carry various measurement instruments, as well as computing devices for image and information processing, and drive components. As the required processing and tasks become more advanced, the equipment also tends to become larger. The 4WDS Rover X120A-LB enables longer operating times even when equipped with numerous expansion devices.

(2) Controllable via wired/wireless connection

The 4WDS Rover X120A-LB supports both Wi-Fi wireless communication and wired USB serial communication. It can be controlled from various devices such as PCs and tablets using specified commands.

Additionally, a wireless robot controller board and a game controller are included as standard, allowing for wireless operation of the unit without connecting a PC. The analog sticks can be used for forward/backward movement and rotation, serving as manual operation for function checks or as an emergency operation method.

(3) Supports a variety of optional accessories

The 4WDS Rover X120A-LB supports numerous optional accessories. Sensors and components can be added according to the intended use, allowing users to fully leverage the capabilities of this large research and development dolly robot while benefiting from the large battery capacity in diverse research and development fields. Please refer to the specifications sheet for details.

(4) Features an easily expandable aluminum frame

The main frame of this product is constructed from aluminum components. While offering sufficient strength, it is also easy to process, allowing users to easily implement various expansions themselves. Holes can be drilled in the top plate to add components, providing the flexibility essential for advancing research and development.

(5) Programmable with Arduino IDE

The control board "VS-WRC071" equipped in this product features an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 microcontroller, allowing control programs to be created using the Arduino IDE. Sample code is provided in the form of an Arduino library with the product, enabling users to customize the firmware themselves.

(※) An environment capable of running Arduino IDE 1.8.19 or later is required for programming VS-WRC071 using Arduino IDE.

(6) Emergency stop switch included as standard

This product comes standard with an "Emergency Stop Switch." The mounting position of the emergency stop switch can be freely changed as long as there are no wiring length or interference issues with other equipment. It is designed to be attached by the user according to the actual operating situation and the mounting status of additional expansion equipment.

(7) Compatible with ROS 2 control

The 4WDS Rover X120A-LB supports ROS 2 message communication. By connecting to a ROS-enabled device via Wi-Fi or USB cable, ROS message communication using micro-ROS is possible.

The sample firmware allows sending movement speed commands from ROS to the Mega Rover using geometry_msgs/msg/Twist type, and acquiring current speed and battery voltage from the Mega Rover. Furthermore, by modifying the firmware, users can send and receive arbitrary messages in addition to the above.

Note that a device running ROS must be prepared separately (e.g., ROS PC (NUC14) option). The recommended operating environment for devices is as follows (setup of libraries not included with this product may be required).

【Recommended Operating Environment for ROS 2 Usage】

OS

Ubuntu 22.04 (64bit)

ROS

ROS 2 Humble

CPU

Intel® Core™ Ultra 5 125H Processor

(※) If not using the ROS PC option, the ROS environment must be set up by the user.

(※) Even if the above conditions are met, it may not operate correctly due to compatibility issues.

(※) Virtual environments are not recommended as they may not allow for safe control due to time lag.
