West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and Hachidori Solar Co., Ltd. announced that they will fully launch their joint residential solar power project on Monday, May 25, 2026, following pilot testing.
This project represents the first initiative in Japan where a railway company leverages its rail-line networks and regional presence to deploy residential solar power services on a wide scale. By providing a residential solar power and battery storage service that can be installed with zero initial cost, the companies aim to implement a distributed energy society.
JR West, as a major consumer of electricity through its railway business, views decarbonization and the enhancement of regional resilience against disasters as vital themes. By combining Hachidori Solar's expertise in distributed energy with JR West's trusted network along its rail lines, the companies aim to promote community development centered on energy.
The project was commercialized following successful pilot tests (PoC) in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures. With the official launch, Okayama Prefecture has been added to the target area, expanding the scope of the project. Moving forward, the companies are considering expanding into Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, which has been designated as a 'Decarbonization Leading Region' by the Ministry of the Environment.
