WHILL Inc. has announced the commencement of a trial for its WHILL Autonomous Mobility Service at Heathrow Airport Terminal 3, recognized as an international hub. This initiative was realized in collaboration with ABM, the UK's largest passenger assistance service provider. As the aviation industry urgently needs to improve accessibility due to an aging population and robust travel demand, WHILL aims to digitize and introduce robotics to conventional mobility services. The autonomous service navigates to a destination within the spacious airport using pre-collected map data and advanced sensors to detect its surroundings. After the user disembarks, it returns unmanned to its original location. It is primarily targeted at customers requiring mobility assistance (PRM). Users simply select their destination on a touch panel. The service is operated in 26 locations globally, with over 1 million total uses. This innovation not only elevates the passenger experience but also reduces the physical burden and man-hours associated with manual wheelchair returns.
