ZERI JAPAN will host a briefing on the climate crisis for policymakers and the public, titled the 'Emergency Briefing on Climate and Nature,' on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 13:00 at Nikkei Hall (3rd floor, Nikkei Building, 1-3-7 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).
Purpose of the Event
As the climate and nature crisis intensifies, there is an urgent need to hear directly from scientists about the latest findings. In 2024, the global average temperature rose by 1.55°C compared to pre-industrial levels, the highest on record. For 2025, temperatures are projected to reach 1.45°C—second only to 2024—confirming the accelerating pace of global warming. In April 2025, the German Meteorological Society and the German Physical Society jointly issued a statement warning of a potential 3°C rise in global average temperature by 2050.
At the Second Global Tipping Points International Conference held in July 2025, around 600 scientists issued the 'Dartington Declaration,' stating that the tipping point for coral reefs has already been crossed and warning that the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the dieback of the Amazon rainforest could occur by mid-century. To avoid these scenarios and limit warming to below 1.5°C, unprecedented rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are essential. Despite such scientific warnings, the COP30 summit held in Belém, Brazil, in November failed to achieve sufficient progress toward phasing out fossil fuels.
In response, the UK held a 'National Emergency Briefing' in Westminster, London, in November 2025. Initiated by 1,046 scientists, the event brought together 1,250 participants, including around 130 members of parliament, for a comprehensive, science-based briefing on climate change, energy, food systems, nature, extreme weather, tipping points, economy, health, and food and economic security. The initiative has been widely praised for promoting risk-sharing based on the latest science, building cross-partisan consensus, fostering societal awareness of the crisis across industry and finance, and repositioning climate and nature policy as crisis management. It represents a new model of directly connecting scientific knowledge to society and politics, redefining climate change not merely as an environmental issue but as a national priority.
This UK experience offers valuable lessons for Japan. In Japan, the impacts of climate change—such as extreme heat and agricultural risks—are becoming increasingly evident. Failure to address these risks could lead not only to social losses but also to economic damage for businesses, including supply chain disruptions and market shifts. However, understanding of climate risks and tipping points remains insufficient across society. To shape future policy and economic directions, a platform for widely sharing science-based risk awareness is essential. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a forum in Japan where integrated, direct insights from scientists clearly outline the climate risks we face, their impacts, and the deadlines for action.
Against this backdrop, ZERI JAPAN and the Climate Emergency Network (CEN) will jointly host the 'Emergency Briefing on Climate and Nature.' This initiative represents a vital step toward enabling Japanese society as a whole to take action based on scientific evidence and shared understanding. It will also contribute to strengthening food and economic security, public health and safety, disaster prevention and mitigation, international credibility, and industrial competitiveness. We sincerely request your understanding and support for this important endeavor.
