Towncross Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Representative: Ryota Tsuji, hereinafter "the Company"), which sells and installs security cameras, conducted an "Awareness Survey on Security Cameras" targeting 500 men and women aged 20 and over nationwide, and announces the results. The survey was conducted in conjunction with "Security Camera Day" on July 8, 2026.

Background and Objectives of the Survey

In recent years, interest in news related to community crime prevention, such as robbery incidents and residential intrusion damages related to "dark part-time jobs," has been increasing. In conjunction with "Security Camera Day" on July 8, the Company conducted this survey to clarify "to what extent people actually feel the necessity of security cameras and to what extent they have installed them." The survey focuses on the gap between the increasing awareness of crime prevention and the actual installation status.

Survey Results Summary

- Only 19.2% of people have security cameras installed at home.

- On the other hand, about 60% (59.8%) feel that the number of security cameras around their homes is "insufficient."

- 55.0% want more security cameras installed around their homes.

- The most common situation where people feel safe is "when there is information about suspicious individuals in the neighborhood" (64.4%).

- The most common trigger for feeling the need for security cameras was "seeing incidents on the news" (42.6%), rather than personal experience.

- The main concern regarding installation is "cost burden" (50.2%), more so than privacy.

- 53.8% agree with public installation using taxes or community association fees.

- By region, the installation rate at home is 31.0% in the three major metropolitan areas, compared to 13.1% in other municipalities. The sense of regional sufficiency is also higher in urban areas, indicating a difference in security camera situations between urban and rural areas.

Only 19.2% have security cameras installed at home

Q1. Do you currently have security cameras installed on your property? (n=500)

Only 19.2% of respondents answered that they have security cameras installed on their property. When combined with those who answered "not installed" (73.8%) and "considering installation" (7.0%), it was found that about 80% have not installed them. This result suggests that while the necessity of security cameras is widely recognized, many households have not yet adopted them.

Looking at regional differences, the installation rate at home was 31.0% in the three major metropolitan areas, compared to only 13.1% in other municipalities, a difference of about 18 percentage points. As discussed later, the percentage of people who feel that security cameras in their area are "sufficient" is also higher in urban areas, indicating a difference between urban and rural areas in both installation rates and sense of sufficiency.

About 60% responded that security cameras around their homes are "insufficient"

Q2. Do you feel that the number of security cameras around your home is currently "sufficient"? (n=500)

Combining "somewhat insufficient" (24.4%) and "considerably insufficient" (35.4%) gives 59.8%, indicating that about 60% feel that the number of security cameras around their homes is insufficient. Only 7.6% of respondents answered "sufficient." Compared to the installation rate at home (19.2%), this highlights that many people feel a lack of "community-wide crime prevention systems" rather than "personal preparedness."

Looking at regional differences, only 4.5% of respondents in municipalities other than the three major metropolitan areas felt that the number of security cameras was "sufficient," compared to 14.0% in the three major metropolitan areas, about one-third of the urban areas. Combined with the aforementioned difference in installation rates at home, both installation rates and sense of sufficiency are lower in rural areas than in urban areas, suggesting a difference in security camera situations between urban and rural areas.

55.0% want more security cameras installed around their homes

Q3. Do you want more security cameras installed around your home? (n=500)

Combining "definitely want more" (23.8%) and "rather want more" (31.2%) gives 55.0%, indicating that a majority want more security cameras installed in their communities. "Do not want more" and "do not particularly want more" combined accounted for only 10.2%. The difference from the installation rate at home suggests a stronger sense of community-based crime prevention awareness than individual preparedness.

Most common situation for feeling safe is "when there is information about suspicious individuals in the neighborhood"

Q4. In what situations do you feel safe when there are security cameras around your home? (Multiple answers) (n=500)

The most common answer was "when there is information about suspicious individuals in the neighborhood" (64.4%), followed by "returning home at night" (55.2%) and "when away from home for extended periods or traveling" (43.8%). This shows that security cameras provide psychological support in specific situations of anxiety that many people experience in their daily lives.

Looking at regional differences, the percentage of people who feel safe "when there is information about suspicious individuals in the neighborhood" was 70.9% in municipalities other than the three major metropolitan areas, compared to 52.7% in the three major metropolitan areas, a difference of about 18 percentage points. While other questions showed a tendency for urban areas to have higher evaluations and satisfaction with security cameras, this item showed the opposite, with rural areas feeling a stronger sense of security, suggesting a difference in the psychological role of security cameras in different regions.

Trigger for crime prevention awareness: "News" surpasses personal experience

Q5. Have there been any triggers that made you feel the need for security cameras? (Multiple answers) (n=500)

The most common trigger for feeling the need for security cameras was "seeing incidents on the news" at 42.6%, surpassing "information about burglaries or suspicious individuals in the neighborhood" (34.0%). Direct frightening experiences for oneself or family members accounted for only 12.8%. This result suggests that media exposure may have a greater impact on forming crime prevention needs than personal or community experiences.

Installation barrier: "Cost" rather than "privacy"

Q6. Are there any concerns about installing security cameras? (Multiple answers) (n=500)

The most common concern about installing security cameras was "cost burden of installation and maintenance" at 50.2%, exceeding "concern about privacy infringement" (41.0%). This suggests that the biggest hurdle to the widespread adoption of security cameras is financial, rather than resistance to surveillance.

Agreement for installing security cameras with taxes/community association fees is about 5.5 times higher than opposition

Q7. Do you agree with installing security cameras using taxes or community association fees for the safety of your community? (n=500)

Discussion

This survey clearly shows a significant gap between the high awareness of the need for security cameras and the actual installation status. While the installation rate at home remains at 19.2%, about 60% feel a lack of security cameras in their communities, and 55.0% desire more installations, indicating expectations for "community-supported crime prevention" in addition to "individual crime prevention."

Furthermore, the trigger for feeling the need for security cameras was "seeing incidents on the news" more than personal experience, and the biggest concern regarding installation was "cost burden." Many people feel the need but are hesitant to adopt them, suggesting that initiatives to lower the cost barrier are needed.

Additionally, regional differences in installation rates and satisfaction with security cameras were clearly revealed between urban and rural areas. The installation rate at home was 31.0% in the three major metropolitan areas compared to 13.1% in other municipalities, and the percentage of people who feel that security cameras in their communities are "sufficient" was 14.0% in urban areas compared to 4.5% in rural areas, with urban areas exceeding rural areas in both cases. Particularly in rural areas, the proportion of people who feel a lack of security cameras is high, while the installation rate is low, highlighting a situation where the development status has not kept pace with the increasing crime prevention needs.

Comment from Ryota Tsuji, Representative Director of Towncross Co., Ltd.

What was impressive in this survey was that while "cost burden" was the most cited concern for installation, over 40% also expressed concerns about "privacy infringement." We had anticipated cost challenges, but in recent years, the role and perception of security cameras in the security camera industry have shifted from "equipment for surveillance" to "equipment for protecting the safety of the community and family." Therefore, the fact that privacy concerns still exceeded 40% was a striking result.

Our company will propose security camera solutions that allow everyone to install them with peace of mind after thorough explanations, not only regarding ease of installation but also regarding video management systems and operational rules.
