TÜV SÜD, an international third-party certification body headquartered in Munich, Germany, has issued a cybersecurity certification for industrial control systems (compliant with IEC 62443-4-1:2018) to SMC Corporation (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Yoshiki Takada).

In recent years, while the development of advanced ICT technologies such as IoT and AI has led to improvements in quality and productivity and cost reductions in the manufacturing industry, cybersecurity threats have also increased. Therefore, in automated factory systems, it is important to adopt products that incorporate security measures from the design stage (secure by design), especially for components that make up the production line. The IEC standard "IEC 62443 series" is an international standard for cybersecurity of industrial control systems, and TÜV SÜD provides services from implementation to certification as a certification body.

TÜV SÜD has now issued the IEC 62443-4-1 certification, which defines the requirements for a secure product development lifecycle, to SMC Corporation, a leader in pneumatic control equipment essential for the FA field. This certification proves that SMC Corporation's product development process is developed and manufactured using secure-by-design principles that incorporate a defense-in-depth approach against anticipated cybersecurity threats, and that it reliably manages product security issues, including vulnerabilities.

Prior to the certification acquisition services for the company, TÜV SÜD also provided related training and gap analysis services for IEC 62443. Through these initiatives, SMC Corporation has steadily built a secure development process that aligns with its own development style.

Going forward, TÜV SÜD Japan will contribute to promoting security measures for industrial control systems in Japan and fostering a sense of security for companies when they adopt products, through various security-related services such as certification and training.
