Palsystem Tokyo Consumer Cooperative (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; Chairperson: Yoko Nishimura) will host a hands-on cooking event on Wednesday, August 26, at Academy Mukōgaoka in Bunkyo City, where approximately 30 member families will make rice burgers together. The instructors will be 'food education leaders'—co-op members—who will also share how the rice used in the recipe is grown at Palsystem's directly partnered farms.

Promoting a Rice-Centered Japanese Diet

The rice burger recipe will be taught by member instructors who have completed Palsystem Tokyo's exclusive 'Food Education Leader Training Program.' These members conduct cooking classes and mini-lectures at events and educational institutions across Tokyo to share the importance of food as the source of life.

Through this program, children will experience cooking and eating their own creations during summer break, learning the meaning of food in building resilience and life skills. The event will clearly explain the journey of the direct-purchase rice used—from environmentally conscious cultivation, to post-harvest drying, hulling, and milling, before reaching the dining table.

In addition to rice burgers, participants will prepare an 'azuki milk drink' using the co-op's original 'direct-purchase boiled azuki beans' and Hokkaido-produced 'Konsen 72 Milk,' as well as 'salt koji-pickled cucumbers' and 'miso soup,' promoting the concept of a rice-centered Japanese diet. Salt koji also uses direct-purchase rice, encouraging meal planning that supports farming communities.

Smiling While Eating, Warming Hearts While Making: 'Onigiri Good'

Since April 2026, the Palsystem Group has been promoting the 'Onigiri Good' campaign to encourage rice consumption and improve Japan’s domestic food self-sufficiency rate. Actions such as event participation and social media posts about onigiri are counted, and upon reaching 10,000 actions, one ton of direct-purchase rice will be donated to children’s cafeterias and similar organizations across the group’s 12-prefecture service area.

By the end of July, the campaign had already reached 10,000 actions, and donation ceremonies to recipient organizations have begun.

This event aims to promote the use of direct-purchase rice and social contribution by sharing smiles over rice burgers and experiencing the warmth of homemade food together with participants.

Palsystem Tokyo will continue to support domestic agriculture through consumer action and work with members toward sustainable production and consumption.
