Report on Key Metrics in the Distribution Process for April 2026
### Transactions with Contract Breeders
At P’s-first direct-managed stores, pets are sourced directly from trusted contract breeders across Japan, bypassing third parties such as auctions. Between April 1 and April 30, 2026, the Pets First Group handled 1,685 pets from these breeders, consisting of 70.9% dogs and 29.1% cats. Transactions were conducted with 271 contract breeders during the month.
Furthermore, to protect the mental and physical health of pets and address the issue of age falsification in the pet industry, we announced in our April 2024 newsletter a phased increase in the minimum transaction age for pets at P’s-first stores from the legally mandated 57 days or older to 60 days or older.
In April, 100% of the pets handled were 60 days of age or older.
### Pet Sales at Stores
Sales volume at P’s-first stores in April reached 1,628 pets, with 76.5% dogs and 23.5% cats. The average age at the time of sale was 106 days, with an average duration of 45 days in the store before being adopted by customers.
To prevent impulse purchases and promote responsible lifelong ownership, we require all customers adopting pets at P’s-first stores to attend a 'Pre-Adoption Seminar.' Of the 1,633 groups that attended the seminar, 1,628 (99.7%) signed contracts for pet adoption, while 5 (0.3%) chose not to proceed.
### Adoptions / Residency at Pet Care & Adoption Center Nikko
Pets discovered to have health issues before sale are treated at our medical centers or Pets First Animal Hospitals. Following observation and appropriate veterinary care, these 'pets requiring care' are supported in finding foster families through P’s-first stores or our group facility, the 'Pet Care & Adoption Center Nikko.'
In April 2026, 10 foster homes were found for pets from P’s-first stores and 2 from the Wellness Management Center. Additionally, 2 pets were moved to domestic veterinary universities for specialized care during adoption preparations.
As of the end of April, 45 pets were residing at the Pet Care & Adoption Center Nikko, with 44 undergoing recovery and seeking foster homes. One pet is scheduled for lifelong care at the facility.
### Cancellations
There were 2 cancellations in April. We take responsibility for the future of returned pets and strive to find them the best families. Both pets are currently looking for new families at our stores.
### Mortality Incidents
Despite medical treatment provided in our facilities, 4 mortality incidents occurred, with 6 deaths occurring within stores due to sudden illness or disease.
All pets that passed away in stores were taken immediately to affiliated or local animal hospitals upon signs of illness, but tragically succumbed during hospitalization or treatment. In response to the month-on-month increase in in-store mortality, we are reinforcing our health management system and intensifying early detection and treatment across all locations.
The total number of deaths was 10, with a mortality rate of 0.59%. The average age of pets at the time of death was 82 days.
