Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the BCG Henderson Institute released a report, 'How the Factory of the Future Is Reshaping the Economics of Manufacturing', surveying 1,000 manufacturers. The report shows AI-enabled future factories can improve productivity by up to 60% by redesigning systems using agentic systems, virtual AI (for autonomous systems and predictive maintenance), physical AI (for robot training and automation), and low-cost advanced computing. Future factories allow high-cost countries to remain competitive without offshoring. For example, upgrading to future factories gives food processing in Germany a 14-point cost advantage over China. Japan ranks 3rd in readiness for future factories due to its robust communication networks and highly skilled talent. This readiness could help Japan counter competition in automotive, machinery, and electronics from China and Southeast Asia. Implementing these technologies could narrow the production cost gap between China and Japan for auto parts supplied to Europe from 7 to 1 point. If Western Europe and the US fail to transition, they risk losing $1.03 trillion and $440 billion in manufacturing value, respectively.
